I'm coming to the realization that CDing is something we're not going to be able to do (because of daycare). So now I need to get or register for a diaper pail. I seem to remember a thread about this a looooooong time ago, but I can't remember which brand won out. So tell me which diaper pail you luuuuuurve. If it's the Diaper Genie, is it the the Genie II or the Elite?
Re: Let's talk diaper pails.
Our Blog
It was the Genie - the diaper champ was poo pooed because after awhile the smell gets in the plastic of the pail and does not come out making the room stink. A friend of mine had the Diaper Champ and trashed it about a year after getting it because of the smell.
We have the Genie - the liners are not the cheapest but in 6 months we have only gone through 6 liner refill things.
we have the safety 1st easy saver diaper pail.
it uses regular bags and doesn't smell either.

I liked the Diaper Champ when DD was little and there were just breastmilk poops but at about 4 months we stopped using it altogether. I just don't like the idea of diapers festering in there for who knows how long. Plus emptying it becomes another chore. We use our regular trash now in the kitchen, dirty diapers get put in a grocery bag first. Our trash service is twice weekly which is plenty to keep it from stinking. We have a 2 story and it's not always practical to bring a diaper straight down to the trash. Upstairs by the changing area we have just a little wastebasket. Only wet diapers go in there, but we do keep bags up there too for surprise dirty diapers in the middle of night etc.
For us a diaper pal is not a necessity.
I started this thread a long while back, because I was so disappointed with our Diaper Champ.
In all honesty, it was great for all the reasons listed above for the first 6-7 months of DS' life. And then after starting solids, especially meat, it was horrible and started really stinking up the room. Now we just have a small trash can in the room with deodorized bags that we toss every evening.
I have thought about giving the Diaper Genie II a whirl with the recs that I received from that previous thread since we'll have double the diapers. We'll have to see. Haven't decided yet.

There is no perfect diaper pail. Period. We have/had a Diaper Genie that we've stopped using. You are welcome to have it if you want. DH hated the whole process getting the bags, putting them in, emptying the genie, etc. Size-wise, it's kind of small, so it seemed like it filled up very quickly. Or maybe our child just pooped a lot.
I have not purchased a Diaper Champ, but DD's daycare in NC had one. Obviously because they had six babies, they emptied it a lot more frequently than you'd have to empty it at home, so stuff really didn't set around in there all that long. I think it's easier to dispose of a diaper in the Diaper Champ, but because we didn't use it at home, I can't speak to how stinky the plastic gets.
Honestly, once we ditched the Genie, we just tied up individual poopy diapers in plastic grocery bags or those plastic fruit and vegetable bags from the grocery store, and now we just step outside and toss it in our outdoor garbage can. Much better than stinking up her whole room.
We also had a regular plastic garbage can with a lid for her wet diapers, and after a few days with the lid on... dear God that stuff reeks.
For our next child, we will likely just go the plastic bag/outdoor trash can route with the dirty diapers, although if you live in an apartment complex, that may not be a practical option for you.
