Baby weight gain

Anyone else struggling to have LO gain weight consistently? Looking for some support.
DD will be 5 weeks tomorrow and is just barely up to birth weight. She was a week overdue when born and weighed a healthy 9 lbs 14 oz. We go in every few days for a weight check and it is still up and down. We are working closely with a LC. I am currently waking DD to feed every 3 hours or on demand which ever is first. Then pumping after every feeding and giving her a 1-2 oz bottle after every feeding. Giving her a bottle is hard because sometimes she refuses it.

Our LC has us doing all this and she is still not gaining weight and I am at my wits end. Every feeding is a struggle bottle or breast and I feel so discouraged that we can't get her to gain weight. I am wondering if anyone else is going through similar struggles and what helped you get through the hard times?

Re: Baby weight gain

  • Hugs, mama! We had issues with LO losing weight post d/c and I was freaking out. It turned out to be a supply issue on my side so between supplementing and using various techniques we were able to turn a corner, but I'm still paranoid about it, so I can only imagine it's worse when it persists. All I can offer is its ok to cry about it!

  • I had a bigger baby as well(10lb) and he lost weight even into week 2. I had to change the way I BF. He now only feeds on one side each feeding for about 20-25 minutes. My LC suggested that so he could get more of that hind milk instead of just the fore milk from both sides. If you aren't doing that, it may help you as well. He turned a month old Monday and we are just crossing that birth weight mark.

  • @car seat‌ you are right, it is so much work. Today it took 90 minutes to feed and pump. I like your suggestion of offering milk every time I hold her. Glad your LO is doing well. Thanks for the support. It really helps to know others went through similar situations.

@vshumway‌ How old is your baby? I wonder if having a higher birth weight contributes to the struggle gaining. I think I will try the offering more milk 10 minutes after feeding. Do you wake up your LO at night to feed? How often?
  • @vshumway‌ My LO would sleep forever (5-6 hours) if I let her. I was also induced. So is she gaining well yet? Good luck. It's nice to know we are doing everything we can.
