Can you tell me about the pick-up, put-down method please

Hi ladies!

I have seen this "pick-up, put-down" method from the baby whisperer mentioned in a few different posts.  I obviously get the general idea by the name but can anyone tell me more about it? I have a crap-tastic napper and think perhaps it might help....TIA =)

  • Basically, when getting your child to nap/sleep, you put them down in the crib, awake but drowsy.  If he cries, you go ahead and pick him up, and after he is calm again, you put him back down.  If he doesn't stop crying while he's in your arms, you still put him down after 2-3 minutes of trying to comfort him.  Then, you start it all over again - as soon as they start crying, pick them up (even if you just put them down) or if you had to put him down after they didn't start crying, you pick them right back up after letting them go.  You do this until they stay calm and fall asleep.  It's not reccommended for a baby under 4 months of age.

It's basically trying to get them to go to sleep without leaving them alone & breaking their trust in you, which is what the baby whisperer says that CIO methods that have you leave the child alone for periods of time.
