2nd Trimester

DVD and class recommendations

My husband and I have very little experience with babies. It's embarrassing, but we don't really know anything about feeding, bathing, diapering babies. We have no friends with kids and live far from our families.

I don't think my husband would read a book, but he has expressed interest in taking classes or watching DVDs. I was wondering which, if any, DVDs or classes you'd recommend for: breastfeeding, labor and delivery, and general baby care. I looked up La Leche League but all of the meetings in my area are during the workday so not feasible.

Thanks in advance!

Re: DVD and class recommendations

  • my hospital has breastfeeding classes that my midwife says get great reviews from patients, as well as infant care and cpr classes.  I would start there and then maybe ask your OB or midwife about others in your area.

  • My husband and I didn't go to any classes (it didn't fit in with our work schedules) so I bought the DVD "Laugh and Learn about Childbirth". It was decent. I think it did a good job at preparing my husband for labor and delivery.

We didn't do parenting classes, my hospital made you watch a series of videos about feedings, bathing, etc before they would even let you leave the hospital with your baby. I also had a lactation consultant visit me 2 times before I left (and I visited their office once after coming home). Check to see what your hospital offers (a lot of places will have lactation consultants that come and see you while you are there).

  • My hospital offers free classes, so we are taking them through there.  We did an infant safety/CPR and a baby care basics and are finishing up our childbirth one.  We have a breastfeeding one next month.
  • My husband and I are in the same boat, and I wanted to take a class with him to get him more involved in the whole process. My hospital offers some but they were pretty expensive, so I used Yelp to find a class that was highly rated and had a more relaxed philosophy of giving birth. We're going to also do the baby CPR class through the hospital though.
  • I am in the same boat. I was an only child til I was about 17 then went to college about the time 1/2 sister was born.  I was not around any infants really when I was young so I know nothing.  Give me a baby puppy or kitten after a c section and I can make sure the little one is ok but a human OMG!!!

Now hubby on the other hand is one of six and some of his nieces and nephews are only 7-10 yrs younger than him so he has a lot of experience changing diapers ect.  LOL he keeps telling me he is going to teach me. hehehe

I just went for my 27 week appointment yesterday and the Dr gave me a packet about he hospital I will deliver at and it has a pamphlet on classes that we can take.  You have to pay of course but they are cheaper than others around that I have seen.

One was a breastfeeding course, CPR infant,  and another is a 1 day workshop that hubby is going to go with me.

Check with your OB and they should be able to give you info.  Mine give the info out at 27 weeks.

  • Get the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. It's only 45 minutes and it will help you both. My DD was so grateful to watch it. He felt so prepared when the baby came.

I got mine from the local library.
