Baby Showers

Just wondering

Not having a shower, not throwing a shower. But I was curious. What is the etiquette when the MTB lives really far away and has to fly in for it. What's the wording on the invite then? Do you ask to ship instead of bring? Or ask for small things only? Or does she or the host just suck it up and pay to ship it all back?

Just to reiterate, I am not in a situation to throw a shower like this. Just curious after reading a few threads on this board.

Re: Just wondering

  • Lurker here...I live in a different state than my family and most my friends so I flew to my bridal shower and my two baby showers (both for baby #1). Since showers are family and close friends they all knew I was flying and very few gave me large presents, or if they did they had it shipped to my house and included a picture if it in their card at the shower. Between those three showers there was only one thing I couldn't fit in my suitcase. There is no need to include anything about this in the invites, it will work out just fine.

  • My cousin flew in for her baby shower and I believe the invitation asked large items to be shipped to their house. I forget exactly, it was 5yrs ago. It's no big deal.

  • I will be having an out of state baby shower. The guests obviously will know that I am traveling. We are choosing to drive due to cost, but we aren't letting that info known. When guests RSVP, if they mention shipping gifts, my mom is just going to say that it would help me out if that is what they choose to do. She will not mention shipping gifts if it is not asked by the guest. I think we should be able to fit it all. If not I will probably do as PP said and return it and then repurchase the same item when I get home or online and have it delivered to my home. Most stores offer free shipping over a certain amount.
  • I am in this situation. We currently live in Kansas, and my sisters are giving me a shower back home in NC. The people coming to my shower know I will be traveling, and I think few people buy large gifts for showers anyway. I hope to get a lot of cloth diapers, but expect to get a lot of clothes. If I do get anything too large, I will take it back and then re-buy it when I get home.
