Ladies who had C section

How long did it take for you to recover? I am 1 week 2 days post surgery. I was doing better every day up until Wednesday night. Since that time I have felt almost as much pain/soreness as I did the day after surgery. It's to the point where I can't even hold my LO to feed him. DH has to do everything because I am in so much pain. I am planning on calling my OB as soon as they open but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this type of set back following a c section.

Re: Ladies who had C section

  • I did! I felt better (pain meds were talking I am sure) and did too much and around 1.5 weeks it got really bad. I had to make myself rest after that. About 2 weeks, 2.5, I saw a major difference. I was able to run at 5 weeks! Just make sure you are resting!

  • You are not experiencing a set back, you had major surgery 1 week ago.  My OB did a 2 week PP incision check.  Is your incision looking ok?

Thats exactly how I felt 1 week PP.  I started to feel MUCH better around 4 weeks and by 8 weeks felt about 100% of my former self.

  • I am now almost 5 weeks, and finally feel normal. I too, was feeling a lot of pain about a week after.  I had to keep getting in and out of the truck (b/c we don't have a low car) and every time I felt like i was stretching out my stitches.  I continued to take the pain meds and around week 3 everything was fine.  Relax and get lots of rest. Usually you'll feel more pain on one side than the other...I would say use that to your advantage.  Roll over to lie down...roll over to get up, anything that lessens the strain on your abs.
  • Same thing happened to me. I saw my doc, and turns out I had a bacterial infection! She prescribed an antibiotic and I was much better a few days later.

  • Are you still taking your prescribed meds, or at least some tylenol regularly? Also, don't do anything you don't HAVE to do. They give you 8 weeks off work for a reason. :)   But yes, call your dr.

  • It could be that you are doing too much, too soon.  Remember, you just had major abdominal surgery!

I experienced a set back around 1.5 weeks because I thought I was well enough to go about my regular schedule. I started feeling completely normal around 3 weeks PP.
  • I'm 5wks pp and around 2 wks got kidney infection! No fun! But now I'm feeling so much better and only a lil sore... I can't wait to work out and help shrink this flap! Lol

  • Thanks ladies! I did see my doctor and all looks ok just normal post op stuff. She pretty much told me to keep taking my pain meds and rest as much as possible. She also took out a knot in the stitches on one side that seemed to be the source of some pulling I was feeling. I'm gonna keep trying to not overdo it and luckily I have lots of support.

  • I didn't feel truly healed until about 8wpp. Until then the pain seemed too come and go every other week or so

I'm 13 weeks pp and my internal incision site still burns. Feeling has not returned on my skin on my belly. I did not start feeling human until probably 3 weeks pp. getting in and out of bed was the worst. My best gf is 10 months pp and says the feeling in her skin on her belly has not returned and at times her internal still burns bad. Also, I was unable to take any pain meds.. Long story.. So I only took a couple Advil a day. Pain meds would have been nice. Take them if you have them!!! (Edited to add)
  • Hi! I felt a major difference between week 4-5 and currently I am 9 weeks PP and I'm feeling pretty good, I've only been able to carry the car seat and baby in the last week without pain.

It's definitely important not to over do it and to take your meds. I'm sure I would have felt better sooner if I did!
  • remember to take your pain meds even if you don't feel you need them at the moment, because when you need them it's too late and you are already in pain, then you have to wait for them to kick in.

I hate taking medicine but knew I needed to and was actually scared to feel the pain so I kept taking them until about week three. I had a lot of discomfort which is expected, it's major surgery. I had staples underneath the skin and the incision itself was glued shut- weird! but at about 4 weeks I was feeling this pinching sensation and it scared me. My Dr said it was totally normal and it was my nerve endings reconnecting and that it could take up to a year to get complete feelings back, but in some areas i may never have feeling again.

Prepregnancy i was running 3-5 miles a day and was in very good shape and i assumed that i would be able to bounce right back after birth. I was wrong. Walking seemed like torture at first, then it got easier. I am now getting back into things, it doesn't hurt but it feels different. But everyone is different!

My little guy is 3 months and in spots it still feels weird, like I'm not touching myself. Take your time and let yourself heal. Don't try and rush yourself back to normal, you will only hurt yourself. this was super hard for me as I am very independent and HATE asking for help and I assumed the healing process wouldn't be that bad. I was WAY wrong. But do call your doctor, don't assume or go reading the internet, your symptoms could be normal or they could mean something. Just call your Dr, better safe than sorry.
  • Let me preface by saying I’m a MASSIVE pain wimp. I cry when I get shots.

I stayed in the hospital 3 nights following the planned c-section. Yes I was sore, but other than the nurses forgetting my pain medicine overnight once on the 2nd night and me being in horrific pain, it was all manageable. I was determined to get off of the catheter and walking as soon as possible! I had the c-section on a Thursday, went home Sunday and stopped taking all of my medicine early Tuesday morning.  I was very surprised and happy to recover so quickly. I followed the doctor’s orders and sat around for 6 weeks until he released me, but I felt totally fine and didn’t have any pain or difficulty.

I’m so thankful everything went so well! I was really upset to have a c-section (he was breech so I had no choice), but looking back, I’m so glad I didn’t have to face labor…the 10 minute surgery was so much easier!

  • The worst part for me was getting up and down after sitting and getting out of bed in the morning.  That went on for about 2 or 2 1/2 weeks before I really felt comfortable getting up and down.  I really tried to take it easy, but couldn't avoid stairs because we live in a split level.

I'm 3 months PP and have no pain or issues at all.  I didn't loose feeling at my incision site and I can hardly see my scar.
  • You guys are making me nervous! I am 9 days out and feel pretty good. I stopped taking my pain meds yesterday. Pooping is still an issue and gas is pretty painful but overall I feel good. I was cleared to drive.. (as long as I stopped my pain meds). Hoping I stay this way and don't regress!

  • I felt fantastic about a week out. However I had a major abdominal surgery the year before and knew how to recover. It helped that my mother was there to help and my husband was really fantastic the entire recovery time. I rested the first week and a half and after that, I felt fine. I didn't do too much, but by 4 weeks I was back to driving. I was walking a lot but didn't do a lot of work during recovery...just changing diapers in the crib and had the baby brought to me for feedings. But then I'm also a quick healer from surgeries.

Take the time to heal. Let your body heal. Just do some walking but don't do any major work, like cleaning or carrying groceries. You just carried a baby for about 9 months and had major surgery to deliver LO. Don't rush your recovery.
