2nd Trimester

Hand/finger pain

Sleeping has become pretty crummy lately and I am open to feedback or help! I am 22 weeks pregnant and my hands are constantly going "numb". Only that's a horrible way to describe it because they hurt and feel tons of pressure and swollen. It is worse at night when I wake up every couple of hours and have to shake and massage my hands gotten to fifteen minutes until I can go back to sleep. Doctor AND midwife said carpal tunnel and that I can go buy wristbands. My concern is that it is a symptom of diabetes (I am overweight and have gained 20 pounds so far). I have had this pain in much smaller doses, infrequently, before I was pregnant. Has anyone had experience with this?

Re: Hand/finger pain

  • Try this before freaking out. Buy a small pillow - mine is like a neck pillow. Sleep with your hand propped.

It was like a miracle for me.
  • sounds like carpal tunnel - this is my first pregnancy, and I came down with it early in my 2nd tri.  I bought nighttime wrist supports (DH calls them my punching gloves, since I'm constantly knocking him with them in the night!), which help some.  I also bought general wrist braces to wear during the day when it gets really bad (like after typing for an extended period).  Those soft squeezy balls you use when you have stress also help sometimes....it definitely sucks, since I haven't felt my finger tips in months (some days it's hard to hold a pen or a fork!).  Good luck!

  • Carpal tunnel. I had it. It sucks! I found the braces made it hurt more.
  • I had those symptoms and worse throughout my second and third trimesters. Nothing helped me amd the
  • Carpal tunnel. I have it in both hands. Usually happens at night but now my left hand will be pins and needles during the day when I do things. I'm left handed too. Wrist braces work. I wear them at night. Might have to wear one during the day. I was overweight too before pregnancy by at least 40 pounds. I have gained at least 15.

First thing I thought of was carpal tunnel. When my hands started going.

  • I have carpal tunnel as well. My midwife suggested lowering sodium intake and eating fresh foods instead of pre-packaged. It's been helping a little. She also said to drink a lot more water than I had been. Good luck!
