What Kind of Diapers Will You Use?

edited March 2014 in October 2014 Moms
Was interested in what people had to say about this and was inspired by the diapers post.

Re: What Kind of Diapers Will You Use?

  • I am considering cloth diapers as well as a combination of recyclable or baby shower raffle diapers.

Not sure if I have the patience or the constitution for cloth, but I'd like to give it a try. Any experience with this?

  • I don't know.... I feel like some babies react differently to different diapers... so I will just wait and see which ones work best for LO when the time comes.

Out of curiousity I did price out Honest Company diapers and holy crap, I will not be buying those!

I recently discovered Targets Up and Up diapers and I might be a convert from Pampers! Love that the tabbies stick on pretty well and it seems to have really good coverage in the back for potential blow outs.

  • DS is cloth diapered and I love it. I can't wait to get my stash ready for the twins (diapers x2 is a perk for me).

  • We will be cloth diapering this one too. I'm actually relieved that I have a large enough stash that I won't have to buy any diapers for this baby. Unless it's a girl. Then I might need a couple girly prints.

I love the idea of cloth, but since I'll be working and DH has refused to change cloth diapers I guess it will be disposable.

I have a hard time already justifying not buying biodegradable diapers, but DH says he wants something reliable and cheap. Pampers or Huggies it is!

  • Ditto @DiannaVB‌ I am set with a stash, unless I have a boy. Then I might want a couple more boyish prints to replace the pink ones. ;) I tried to best to keep most of them gender neutral though

  • With DS we started with Huggies because DH refused to use off-brand diapers. We tried Luvs, but even when we went up a size, DS still soaked through.  We have been buying the Wal-Mart brand diapers for 18+ months now, and they are great for us.  I dig the price, and DS has never ONCE had a blow-out or soaked through them.

We will start with whatever the hospital sends with us, then test out the Wal-Mart brand to see if we have any issues.
  • I haven't voted yet because I am so unsure! I would love to try cloth, but I am scared it is too big of a commitment for us. I used to follow a blog where the mother worked from home and wanted to CD, but it ended up being too much work for her. I might have to check out the cloth diaper board :)

@GretchenWeiners7 I didn't even know there was a board for this! Thanks!

  • We have been happy with the pampers swaddlers sensitive. The only way I would use cloth is if the new baby had really sensitive skin that reacted to the diapers. Cloth doesn't really save money unless you use them for multiple kids. Cloth is definitely better for the environment. But, not as much as you might guess when you factor in the water and electricity that goes in to cleaning them. Oh, and I'm too lazy to use them. That's the biggest reason. I think being a working mom is hard enough. I'm not trying to add more chores. Even with a diaper service I think it is still more work. They are pretty darn cute though.

  • We used pampers with DD1 so we started DD2 with pampers but she ended up leaking through them all the time. Once we switched her to huggies, she was fine. So maybe it depends on the child? I have no clue! It was strange. Anyway, we buy our diapers at BJs and that's what they sell. They used to sell a club brand that we liked and was soooo much cheaper but they don't seem to have them anymore. Not sure what happened there!

  • My sister is giving her cloth diapers to me that she used for both her two little ones. It's a great relief to not have to worry about the cost of diapers. Even if I wasn't getting them from my sister I would still get my own. Cloth diapers are cheaper in the long run, they don't cause diaper rash like other kinds do, they are way cuter in my option, and are just as effective as other kinds of diapers if used correctly.

  • We started with Pampers Swaddlers. I think this is what most hospitals use (ours did). I lovvvvve that blue line that tells you baby is wet. It was especially awesome as a newborn motn changes.

Luvs all the way. They work perfectly fine to hold in the poop and pee. I've never noticed a difference between them and the higher name brands. And cheaper than Pampers or Huggies.

Actually, I'll probably use something with a wet detector strip in the beginning because I found it hard to tell if the diaper was wet or not when they are newborns. I'm not sure if Luvs has that in the smaller size. I didn't start using them until size 3.

This is me exactly word for word!

This shows that cloth diapers are way cheaper in the long run. This also takes in account the laundry costs. It would be even cheaper for me because I make my own laundry detergent.

Luvs does not make the wetness indicator diapers. :-(
I agree that those are best for the newborn stage, but have been using Luvs since then.

  • DS is in cloth at home, but DC doesn't do cloth, so he gets whatever I have stashed from coupons and sales.  The new baby will be in cloth as well.  DH wants to find out the sex of this one, so if this ones a girl, I will be picking up a few girly ones too.  I have plenty in my stash already, but they're mostly yellow, green, orange, and neutral prints because we were team green with DS.

I will say, don't stock up on newborn sizes regardless of cloth or disposables.  I had 36 newborn pre-folds that I got on super clearance from Green Mountain Baby along with 8 wool covers I made from recycled sweaters.  Well, DS ended up being over 9 lbs and 23 inches long, and my newborn diapers didn't fit him, and they started him in 1s at the hospital.

  • I may use cloth in the beginning and then use both cloth and Honest diapers when I go back to work.
  • We are thinking of trying pampers swaddled sensitive. It's our first so we have no experience with diapers but based on reviews and research that what I think we will try first. I will probably just get a box of newborn and a box of size one and go from there.

  • Since I'll be a SAHM I definitely want to do cloth diapering and I'm so excited about it. Most people think I'm nuts but since trying for baby I've done so much research and I can't wait to start buying them!

You can always try out cloth diapering and then change your mind. Jillians Drawers offer a try before you buy. If you don't like it, it only puts you $10 in the hole!

  • Pampers Baby Dry. We used to use Pampers Swaddlers, but they give DS a rash :-/

I can't wrap my head around cloth diapers (I don't think there's anything wrong with it - just not for us). When DS has a big blow out we even throw out the onsie. I can imagine washing dirty diapers! Lol.

  • We will do disposable. It would be a stretch to try to get Dh to get on board with cloth. We have thus far been happiest with target up & up and huggies. We have really never had diaper-related blowouts.
  • I didn't discover target diapers until after my son turned one, but they are the best disposable diapers. I would buy them even if they were not cheaper. We have the best luck with them.

you'd lose less clothing!! never had a 'blow-out' in cloth. and EBF/EFF poop is water soluble so just chuck them in the machine. it's not like you're washing with a washboard and mangle, right?

the argument about touching poop or poop getting in your washer just flabbergasts me. What about your own underwear? Are they disposable? I mean, I'm sure you wipe thoroughly but there are still microscopic poo particles...what about when your kid vomits all over you? or blood got on your clothes, sheets, towels, whatever? a washing machine was made to wash these things!
    ;)

Hey , I never said our argument is logical! Haha. But for the other things.... If they are minor and happen infrequently, I'd do an occasional load. Lots of vomit and blood? In the trash!!

Did you know the Pampers Swaddlers now go up to size 5? Yay!
We have always used Pampers with both boys and love them. Every time we used a store brand, my boys had terrible rashes, so we have had to stick with Pampers. We order from Amazon Mom. I think you get 15% or 20% off the regular price, plus whatever coupon code Pampers has running (usually $2-3 off) and the boxes are much bigger than what you can get at the store.

I'd wanted to do cloth with DS, but we lived in a very small loft and there was no extra space for another diaper pail as well as no time. (We are both working and in grad school). I'm ok with my choice. Even though we live in a bigger place, I don't know if I want to invest in them at this point or not. I really do love pampers swaddlers, though.

  • We have done cloth with both kids so far, and will continue with this one :)  The only time we use disposables is when we travel, which isn't that often.  I am hoping to have a girl so that I can buy some of the cute girl prints though :)  As cute as the robots and dinosaurs are, I'm ready for a change!
