Sleep help for 5 year old?

For the past week or so, DD1 will go to bed but still be coming back downstairs almost 2 hours later announcing that she can't sleep.  Her current bedtime is 7pm so that she gets up by herself at a decent time in the morning.  She won't take medicine so melatonin is not going to happen.  Any other suggestions?  I feel like she has been running around more during the day since the sleeplessness started so I would think she would be more tired but apparently not.

  • What's her bedtime routine prior to bed, is it a calm transition to bed?  How many hours of sleep is she getting?

Honestly by five coming out of their room is just not an option or there will be consequences. I can't make them sleep but I can make them stay in their rooms.
  • Is she tired during the day?

Sometimes I let DS sleep somewhere else if he cannot sleep in his room.
There are also benadryl dissolvable tabs that my kids will take even though they won't take pills.

wait, wait...  you said "for the last week or so".... did everyone forget about daylight savings time?  My daughter has also been having some trouble sleeping at 7 because to her body, it's only 6pm.   So we've been letting her stay up til 8 /8:30 and slowly moving her bedtime up from there.  Yes, she was crazy tired the first few days but it is what it is. I can't fight her natural clock and i"m not about to medicate her for this.

The "spring forward" is always hard on kids.
