Furniture shopping help - color opinions

As I mentioned a while back, we're redoing our living room. I'm getting a gray sectional, and teal and yellow are going to be my accent colors. Target has a line of furniture and decor in those colors.

Most of the accents (rug, pillows, lampshades) will have teal or yellow in them. Probably gray curtains.

My dilemma is this: they have the entertainment center, end tables, and console table I want for by the front door all available in teal, yellow, gray, or white. At first I thought I'd so the entertainment center and console in teal, and the end tables in white. But I'm torn. I think doing them all in anything but white would be overwhelming, and all in gray would be too much gray with the couch. Opinions? It's the threshold windham line if you want to look at it.

Re: Furniture shopping help - color opinions

  • I would stick with either white or gray for the furniture. If you are worried about too much gray you could put accent pieces in teal and yellow on them. Maybe picture frames or vases or something. I would be worried that you won't like the teal in a year or two and it is much cheaper to replace accents than the furniture.

  • I would get them in white. But I know I would get tired of the teal or yellow very quickly and would want to change it up in a year or so. You can replace the pillows and picture frames much more easily than the furniture! What color will the walls be?

  • My tendency is to go more neutral w/ furniture and add the pops of color either through paint or other accents, like pillows, artwork etc. Buying furniture in a bold color like yellow or teal would feel way too committal for me.

  • Whie furniture. Yellow and teal rugs, pillows and drapes that you can change later.

  • Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. I've just had white furniture for a while, so I was ready to branch out a bit. Maybe I'll just get one piece in gray.

Roses, the walls are beige right now. We're in a rental, but we could change them if we want.

Are we talking light gray or closer to charcoal? I'm having a hard time picturing the furniture in those colors.

    Medium gray.

White furniture, but the console table in teal or yellow. One piece in color would be fantastic, IMO.

That's what I was thinking, the console table.

In that case, I would probably do the entertainment center in the gray, the rest white, and try to find a curtain in one or both of your accent colors maybe with some white to tie the rest of the furniture into the room.

That's another good option. So much to think about, and I'm so indecisive. :)

  • I would definitely keep big pieces like furniture neutral so that if I wanted to change the colors of the room I could do so cheaply and easily.  I also like the idea of one of the smaller pieces in a color - that way if you do want to replace it it's only one piece.

If the sectional was gray I would do white furniture.

Agreed. I love color, it's a bold choice, but a fun one. If you REALLY hate it down the road, spray paint is your friend.

  • Our nightstands are from that line (in black) and I love them so much!  Great choice!  I also agree to keep the main furniture pieces a neutral like white and change the accent pieces down the road.  Since you mention being able to paint, what about a soft light teal paint for the walls?  That would really pop against the white furniture and still be fairly neutral.

I think I'll have enough accent pieces in teal that painting the walls that color would be overkill. I'll have the console table, a couple of frames that I'm making a wall gallery with, some of the throw pillows, and probably one lamp shade that will sit on the console. I do wish I could paint a soft gray, because I don't feel like tan and gray go together. We'll see. DH's honey do list is long enough. :)

Sorry, I missed the part where you had decided on the teal console.  :-)  Yes that would be a lot of teal.  We have tan/beige walls and are considering a charcoal gray couch.  I plan on using a bunch of warm and cool accent pillows and think the walls might actually work.  You might be surprised when you get all of the pieces in there.

  • @auroraloo‌, I think DH would prefer we keep the walls neutral because his ex-FIL owns our duplex and he's (DH) the maintenance man. :) The less painting, the better. He already painted when we moved in, doesn't want to have to when we move out.

I'm not sure I love that shade of yellow in the threshold line enough to have a piece of furniture in it. I wish they had it set up in the store so I could tell.

@meglew, it's definitely one of those things I'll have to see once it's all set up. Can't wait to put everything together.

Oh! I love it! They have it in our store. If I happen to be in Target tomorrow i"ll snap a pic.

Thanks! They only have teal and white at ours. I never know how color correct everything looks on my phone from their website (does that sentence even make sense? It's getting late).
