Introducing solids

This was posted on O13 and N13 boards so I thought I'd share:

Looks like introducing foods early is the new way. No later than 4-6 months. Skipping rice cerael completely and introducing nuts, milk, eggs as early as 6 months.

Re: Introducing solids

  • Hmm I think I will still wait till 6 months but like I did with DD#1 I won't delay introducing nuts, eggs and dairy. I only waited till she could handle the textures so maybe 8 or 9 months. No allergy issues. That being said if there was a history of allergies in the family I might have waited.

  • I plan to start introducing food/purées to DS at 6 months and will most likely skip rice cereal. We plan on making most of DS's food. Curious to here my Pedi's recommendation on this topic. We'll discuss at our 4 month appt in a couple weeks.

  • We waited until 6 months for DS1 and will for DS2 as well. I did start with rice cereal, oatmeal and homemade purees with DS1 but may try BLW with DS2.

  • You can definitely skip any of the cereals. #1 wouldn't eat them at all, so his first solid was banana, then sweet potato.

  • We started solids just after 6 months with DS1. We started with veggies and waited 2-3 days between introducing all new foods so we'd be able to identify any allergies. We'll follow a similar plan for the baby.

  • I can't believe Jack will be 6 months in just under 2... We plan on starting with purées and no rice cereal.

This is what I plan to do, following DDs cues
  • I'd just like to add that I think it's wild we are already talking about babies eating solids. I remember waaaaay back when we were all complaining about nausea and food cravings and having to pee all the time.

I know :( they are already growing up too fast!

We'll skip cereal too...DS1 HATED it.  We introduced solids to him at 5 months. We'll just play it by ear with this one
I will say though I have a friend from h.s. on my facebook.  Her LO is 2 weeks older than mine and she posted a picture today of him eating a sucker! She posted other pics a few days ago of him eating carrots.

  • I've read a couple articles about going back to the 4-6 months rec. I think it's just important to read your baby's cues and go from there. (That is unless you think your baby's "cues" lead you to jars of green beans at 2 months.)

We started DS at 5 months. I never did rice, but I did do oatmeal first. I didn't delay any allergens except honey and my pedi agreed with that.

  • Has anyone read the article on LLL about introducing veggies and meat before cereal? I have to find it. It was interesting.

@amberpro, the reason to delay honey is botulinum toxin so you definitely did a good thing lol. No honey before 1, guise!

    That's what I said ;)

Oops... Reading fail. I thought that you thought I did honey , lol. Yep! That's why we waited on that one.

Yes, I was agreeing with you but explaining why because some people probably don't know and I know how some people don't like to research lol.
Lol, right? I was editing my comment to show my reading fail.

There's conflicting research on it some studies say introducing allergens early can actually help build up tolerance and prevent allergies. So who knows. I think you just have to watch them closely after giving them something new and like PP said don't give multiple things at the same time or you won't know what caused the reaction if there is one. No peanut butter tofu shrimp sandwiches!

  • We plan on starting baby led weaning at six months. I'm unsure what I'm doing about allergens. He currently has dairy and soy intolerance.
Most allergies don't present with a sever reaction such as anaphylaxis at first exposure, so watching for less severe symptoms and going slow should be safe. Of course, a six month old can't tell you his throat and tongue are itchy after eating sonething .

  • We will start between 4&6 months. He won't be getting any allergens because of Mirabella's severe allergies, but that might be a moot point because his pedi is already recommending allergy resting because of his skin.

  • Wait...@hercules03 I thought they didn't get enough iron from BM which is why you need iron rich foods around 6 months. No true?

Btw, the article OP linked was worth the read just for the line, "white rice cereal, the wonder bread of baby food." Right, @ricecereal?
    Exactly!!  I'm glad you agree.
  • Apparently, I'm in the minority starting before 6 mos.  We started DD2 on oatmeal 1x/day this weekend.  She is/was drinking bottles of formula every 2-3 hours so I knew she was still hungry and pedi said the same.  So far so good.

We will stick with cereal for about 2-3 weeks and then start introducing fruits/veggies.  We did the same with DD1.

  • Like I did with DD1 I will start with purées, but not till 6 months and I'll make them myself -- I actually had a lot of fun making different fruit and veggie purées last time.

  • My almost 10 year old barely ate anything for a year except formula and she is quite a good eater.
  • @yezbick9 I am actually really glad I've got an older one.
  • We started with avocado and oatmeal. We held off for a long time with sweet things like banana and sweet potatoes, because I thought it would be hard to go back to bland veggie stuff if he had already tasted the wonder that was sugar.

  • Baby lead weaning seems very logical. I'm not in a hurry to give LO anything besides breast milk/formula if necessary.

I know I will get grief from my family, bra cause my cousins baby was EBF for a year, became iron deficient, and is resistant to food. I know that's not the norm, and I can stand my ground.
