Feeding on demand & older kids (STM+?)

Any other STM+ having some trouble actually feeding on demand?

This morning DS3 was starting to hungry fuss, but it was time to leave for the big kids' Jiu Jitsu practice.  Other times, DS3 will start displaying hunger cues right as it's time to pick up the big kids from school.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't let him starve because of the older kids - if he were screaming, I'd stop and feed him - but he does sometimes have to wait and be a little hungry for 15-20 minutes before he gets to nurse.

Other moms having this same experience, or similar?

Re: Feeding on demand & older kids (STM+?)

  • This. I am trying to feed on demand (ff) and pump three times a day, then baby cries and spits up for an hour or two, maybe naps a bit then we start again! DD is in Kindergarten and is generally just busy. Yesterday was her day off and it was just the three of us - that's going to take some practice. Today DH is out of town and we have two back to back birthday parties! And no sleep...

Thankfully grandma was available to take DD to Tae kwon do this morning.

Sometimes LO does have to wait to eat or I have to feed him before he's technically hungry, because life. Also I gave up BFing partly because I just didn't want to fight him in public (he was not a super BFer). I am finding the older he gets the more I can predict his routine and plan around it.

  • Yes, I have this issue too. I see if lo is interested in eating about 20 min before I know we have to leave. Also, if it has been 2+ hrs since he last ate and I know we will need to be in the car for a bit, I will wake him to eat. It should get easier as they get older and have more set patterns.

  • I feed her a little early if I need to take the bigs somewhere. Last week was my first week on my own with all three, and it was a challenge.
  • Yep. She tends to nurse in bed around 4-5 am. I take DS to school at 7 am. She usually starts crying in the car (although she hates the car anyway so hard to say why she's really crying!). I feed her as soon as we get home but yeah third child gets the shaft ;-)

  • Yup! 5TM here and feel your pain! I have had to park in a parking lot before or after pick up to feed. And like all of you my LO is hard to predict and is a comfort nurser so it can get over whelming! Glad my 2 oldest bigs wanted to ride the bus this year :) makes things a little easier, next year no more bus route by our house but by then LO will be 8-9 months and distractable w a toy or such :) it gets easier.
  • Right there with you as TTM! It is much more difficult this time around since the older two are in school (Kindergarten and pre-school) now and lots more shuttling around.  Feeling a little guilty about it, but there's not much I can do about drop-off/pick-up.  So, I just try to feed LO about 45 mins before we need to leave to go anywhere and cross my fingers that she will be able to fall asleep en route.  I know it will get easier as sleep schedules develop, so looking forward to that!
