Eczema suggestions (update:pip)

LO has yellow crusty skin that's red underneath that our pedi labeled eczema :( it's only on the back of his head and worse on the sides of his face where sideburns would be. Any suggestions to lotions that have helped? Pedi said hydrocortisone but i want to avoid steroid creams; plus she said it would only help with the redness. Poor LO must be miserable :(

Edit: added a pic on hopes of deciding whether this is actually eczema or cradle cap

Re: Eczema suggestions (update:pip)

  • Just by the way you are describing it, it sounds like cradle cap to me. But I use the California baby calendula cream. It's a miracle worker! You can find it at target, in the aisle with the baby shampoo and diaper rash cream. I even use it on my eczema and it's fantastic.

  • I second the calendula cream and also recommend coconut oil!

@mmc0323 DH thinks it's cradle cap as well. SIL thinks it's both; she stated cradle cap doesn't turn red and isn't on the sides of the face. So I am at a loss.

LO does rub at it a lot and irritate it when he tosses and turns his head at might so maybe that is why it's red?

thanks for the suggestion, I will try it!
  • Sounds like cradle cap. I bought Bella B all natural shampoo for cradle cap and a cradle cap mit. After just 3 shampoos it's gone.

  • If it is in fact Eczema, it's resulted by the lack of cermacides produced by the skin for protection, so they best creams for it would be ones with cermacides in it.  We use Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy.

  • My LO has excema in the exact same places and we use aveeno baby cream (not the excema one, just the regular oatmeal lotion) works amazing

  • Thanks! Sil gave us some of the aveeno to try; how often do you all use it?
  • The pic looks like eczema to me.  I use it a few times a day.  I put it by his changing table, and feel his skin at every diaper change.  If it's feeling dry I put some on.

  • My LO has this as well... The Pedi called it seborrheic dermatitis. He said it was another name for cradle cap in places other than his scalp. I looked it up and found that it is a type of eczema. He has it on his forehead, one cheek and sideburns area, and under his arms. Which the dr said was common.
He gave me this same advice about the hydrocortisone but I would like to avoid it as well. I exfoliate it with a warm washcloth ( the dr said this may make it worse but it seems to help) then I use coconut oil and aquaphor.
The only problem is whenever it seems to be almost gone it comes back full force the next day. I'm curious to see other peoples solutions.
  • Is he a bf baby? My nephew has bad eczema on his head and back and they told my sister to eliminate citrus juices and dairy from her diet. It's improved drastically since she did. Could it possibly be an allergy?

Both my son (2.5) and LO have eczema as well. I have just about tried it all. The one tip I can tell you us you must stay on top of it and moisturizer all ALL the time. As a pp wrote eczema is in fact the skin missing certain cermides (fatty cells) the very top layer of skin is responsible for keeping it hydrated and protect it from allergens. This layer is composed of 9,types of cermides and they label 1-9 when someone has eczema they are missing at least 3 of them. Psoriasis for example is when they have too much of one and not enough of the other.Anyway enough of that the bottom line is make sure you constantly moisturized the babys skin if you were only moisturizing when it's dry it's too late you must always keep it moisturized. Pat dry after bath and get moisturizer on within 3 mins. Do NOT rub the skin at all. Treat it like a piece of tissue paper otherwise you am irritate it and case more inflammation. the good part is the babies normally outgrow it within a year or two sometimes they don't but more often they do. I have done a ton of research and saw top pediatric dermatologists in manhattan on eczema so if there's anything you want to ask me just let me know good luck.
  • Well, I'm probably no help bc the only thing that has helped DS is the steroid cream. We've used it 5 times on the spots on his face and they're gone, no red, no inflammation, nothing. It wasn't my first choice by any means, but they were bad and he was starting to itch them. I also have some Cali Baby Eczema Body Wash that we've started using and have gone back to all Free detergents and anything that touches him. Poor guy, his face was really bad.

The cream didn't work for us. :( Though not that the spots are gone, I'm going to try and see if it will help them stay away. I need to try it on mine. A friend swears by coconut oil, told me yesterday, so I'm going to try that too.

On a sidenote for my two and half-year-old son I have found that making my own body butters and moisturizes is a lot better for his skin than the items that you find in the store for example Aveeno baby eczema irritates his skin it is so sensitive and the ingredients include alcohol which is not good for eczema. I make a simple body butter using coldpressed raw organic extra virgin coconut oil olive oil and beeswax with some essential oils like melrose it works wonders for his skin
  • My little ones cradle cap did not look like that . It wasn't really red and she didn't have yellow crust . So I would say it was not cradle cap but I'm not a doc and I can only go off of what my LO cradle cap looked like .

Aveeno has always done horrible things to my skin and made me itch. I won't use any of their products anymore.
  • My pedi recommended Hydrolatum for my little guys eczema. It's not a steroid cream and has worked wonders for him.

  • @katemw I'm with you. My son would actually cry when I put it on his skin. It's crap for people who have real skin issues such as eczema

Ah, boo, you guys are killing me, haha. I was about to say I'm going to try the aveeno for a week and see what it does. But now that new info makes me scared. I've used it yesterday and today and it doesn't look worse so I suppose I will give it a day or two, then try the other suggestions if it isn't making a change.

@KateMW‌ I will end up caving and try the cortisone if the other attempts don't work. It's good to know it worked for you. I don't want him to suffer forever or for it to get infected.

  • @BEDAGI Try the coconut oil suggestion, but if it's really bad {I couldn't get the pic to blow up for me} do the Rx cream first and then use the other suggestions to keep it at bay. That's what we're doing.
  • DS1 has pretty bad eczema. We have good luck with a steroid cream when he has outbreaks. We also use Aveeno eczema lotion and the oatmeal bath packets when he's really dry. His eczema as a baby seemed to be exacerbated by milk, so we has to switch to Nutramigen formula when he was little. I also use free and clear detergent.

  • I agree it's eczema. Jack has some minor spots, nothing as bad as in that picture, but Aquaphor applied after every bath (which we do every other night) has nearly taken it all away.
