To MN or not to MN

I was just canvassing opinion on whether we should bother with a middle name for our daughter if we can't agree. We have a first name locked in (Bobbie - not looking for opinions on that though), but the MN is becoming a bit of a ball ache.

Without sounding morbid, we have a lot of dead people to name after. Both mine and DH's mothers have passed, along with all my grandparents. SIL has given her 2 boys middle names honouring members of DH's family, but this is the first girl. We always said Rosalind in honour of DH's mama, but as mine passed last year we felt a bit bad about choosing one over the other - especially as my nephews already have FIL's and Grand-FIL's names as middle names.

DH has a middle name (the masculine version of his grandmother's name), but i've not got a middle name, so i'm all for not giving her one.

The only one we've sort of agreed on is Gloria, after the song (the Patti Smith version) but that has no family connection. It's just a name we like. Should we carry on debating or just not give her a MN? Has anyone here not bothered with one?

BTW, we're British (hence the spellings - sorry, force of habit!), so i don't know if that will influence anyone's opinions due to the accent etc. Our surname is Waterhouse.

Re: To MN or not to MN

  • I say go for a neutral middle name (not after dead relatives).  Gloria is lovely!

  • I agree w/ PP  - give her a middle name, but since you have several relatives, I'd go with a non family, something you think is pretty.  Bobbie Gloria is cute!
  • I'd pick Gloria.

  • Out of the possible mn you mentioned I like Gloria. I agree with pp that neutral might be best in this situation.
  • I agree, I wouldn't go with a family name.  How would you choose?  Pick something that has a special meaning to you and DH.

  • I say give her one, and Gloria is nice.

I know you said you're not looking for opinions on Bobbie, but I feel like giving Bobbie a feminine mn is a good idea :)

  • Thanks for the feedback.

I think it's important for us to give her names that mean something to us personally, hence the song thing. Bobbie comes from a Black Lips song that we played at our wedding and my obsession with Bob Dylan.

I feel bad not honouring the dead people, but we've just got so many now that she'd have a name a mile long!
