Adding LO to insurance

Once she's born I will obviously add LO to our health insurance, but do I need to add her to vision and dental right now too?   They don't need to go to the dentist for at least a year or more right?  And I know I've heard of small babies going to the eye doctor but wasn't sure if that was in special cases....though vision is the cheapest so it can't hurt but I wasn't sure.

Re: Adding LO to insurance

  • If they have to go to either, it will likely be covered under your medical as it is not considered routine care. Dd had to go to the the eye dr and they said for little kids that are not regular patients it is considered a specialist visit. Not sure if it's like that with all insurance though.
  • Thanks all, didn't know medical would cover them for all.

if they are vision at this young of age it should be covered under medical. You would not be going to see if they needed glasses more just health issues that are typically covered under medical.

ETA: sorry for reference I work with optometrists and ophthalmologists, so if eel pretty confident on this one but it never hurts to call and ask your insurance. But it typically all comes down to coding and billing and how the doctor codes things. Vision insurance is more for glasses, contact lenses etc.

This. DD has been seeing a pediatric optometrist for a couple years but all I ever pay is my medical copay. Of course her glasses are out of pocket since I have no vision coverage.

Some say to bring your LO to the dentist as soon as they have their first tooth but my pediatrician says they don't need to go until after they're 2.
