Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Transitioning from swaddling...

We've swaddled almost since day one and I thank that for our daughter sleeping through the night around 1 month old. Well, she's 5 months now and I know I need to transition her from swaddling because she's getting really close to rolling onto her tummy while on her back. The problem is she won't fall asleep without her binkie and when she's not swaddled she knocks the binkie out of her mouth with her hands, rubs/scratches her face, and pokes eyes. She doesn't fall asleep. I've been trying to find a product that'll keep her hands from her face but would be safer than a swaddle if she rolled over. Any suggestions?

Re: Transitioning from swaddling...

  • I don't really have any suggestions but will follow this as I'm in nearly the exact same boat! One thing I have heard is to try and transition by swaddling arms out for a bit, or one arm and then none until she gets used to it. GL!

  • I second Merlin Magic Sleep Suit. We have had the same problem and she has been sleeping wonderfully in it. Started at about 5 months (currently 5.5)
  • Both my girls are in Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit since they both found their hands. H would spend a good part of the night fighting her way out of the swaddle to get her hands in her mouth. They both have been sleeping form about 10:30pm - 5-6am since we put them in it.

  • Sleep suit lover over here!!

  • So I've been in the same position but read that you shouldn't use the Sleep Suit  after they start rolling over.  Went to MD yesterday to make sure ears were okay b/c we got him sleeping out of the swaddle in a sleep sack but the paci keeps coming out.  My LO is 5 months.  Are your babies rolling over in the sleep suit?
  • Our 5 mo loves to be swaddled to but now that shes in a crib we can't swaddle her. We use sleep sacks every night so her feet are still enclosed but her arms are out. She rolls a lot in her sleep but we just hold the pacifyer in her mouth for her while she rolls around untill she eventually falls asleep. Unless its taking forever to fall asleep then we just rock her to sleep and place her down while she's asleep. Eventually we know we will have to just lay her down and let her fall asleep on her own even if that means listening to crying : (
  • Sorry, going to use your question for another question..... :-)

Another vote for the magic sleep suit.

And all the other MMSS lovers.

My DD is a " hot sleeper". We live in NY, so not exactly a warm climate right now. (Hopefully soon!!!!) She's been sleeping better in a onesie while being swaddled in A&A blankets. We keep temp around 67 at night and she still wakes herself up and is usually super sweaty. We have tried the one arm out method but she is like a swaddle ninja and always busts out.

So...I'm thinking of ordering one. But worry if she would be hot in this suit. Any input is appreciated!! :-)

  • We tried the one arm out for a bit, then another. I also tried a long sleeve sleep sack, but didn't put her arms in the sleeves. These all temporarily worked. I was crazy and did this around the 4 month wakeful lol. DD is now sleeping better. Now I put a lovey near her one hand, it stops her from knocking out the paci an she snuggles her face in it. This works for now ☺️

  • I've never swaddled my son...Hes always slept with me at night and during the day he likes his bouncer. newborn-1 1/2 months he slept in my arms then started sleeping beside me.

  • To JGo517 . i live in NJ. I don't have the magic sleep suit. I can't imagine putting my LO in something so thick. He gets warm pretty easily.

LO busted out of his swaddles at 2months. Even the velcro ones couldn't hold him. So we moved to the sleeper sacks. We got one that has the band you can wrap around his chest on the inside. He sleeps perfectly fine.

If your worried about it being too hot, try dropping the temp 1 degree at a time? Our pedi said it was even alright to go down to 65. You can tell if your baby can handle it by looking/touching. They look like we do when we're cold.

My LO is 4months now, house is a consent 65, sleeper sack with a onesy underneath. Hasn't gotten sick all winter.
