Pregnant after a Loss

Who here loves Eggs Benedict?

I'm obsessed with Eggs Benedict. It's my favorite breakfast dish, hands down.

On Sunday, we're supposed to go out for brunch for my MIL's birthday to an extremely popular, high-rated brunch spot. I mean, everyone raves about this place, it's considered by many to be #1 in the city for breakfast/brunch. I've always wanted to go, but this will be my first time. I was looking at the menu online and reading some reviews, and the Eggs Benedict there looks like it will be the Eggs Benedict to end all Eggs Benedicts.

But isn't it on the no-no list for for preggos? Because of the Hollandaise sauce and the runny yolks in the poached eggs? Wahhhh I'm getting really sad about this. I've been so good since I got my BFP! Quit coffee cold turkey, haven't eaten any deli meats or sushi (which is so hard because I LOVE sushi!), no alcohol, soft cheeses, etc. But no, please, not my Eggs Benedict! Anything but that! :(

Re: Who here loves Eggs Benedict?

  • Yup. It is on the no list. Sadly.

  • Yeah I'm not gonna lie...definitely posted this thread in hopes that some of you would be like, "It's ok just this once!" Haha. I want it sooooo badly! And since restaurants have to use pasteurized eggs, doesn't that kind of eliminate a lot of the salmonella risk anyway?
  • I am seriously missing runny eggs, so I am tempted to tell you to cheat (but I know I'd probably play it safe myself, chicken out and order some awesome belgian waffle or something instead).

I just posted on another thread that I have been eating mayo this whole time. Like hollandaise, it's supposed to be on the no-no list.

Just sigh. I don't know what to tell you.

  • I eat runny eggs at least once a week. I would absolutely not think twice about indulging in your eggs Benedict!

I mean, how many times have you gotten sick eating raw cookie dough or runny eggs when you haven't been pregnant?

This! And this whole thread has me drooling. Add me to the camp full of those who can't get homemade hollandaise down quite right. :(

  • I would totally eat hollandaise sauce. I also have eaten runny yolks in egg sandwiches from my favorite restaurant (on a croissant with gruyere. I mean. COME ON. How am I supposed to say no?). They use pasteurized local eggs and it's a higher end place, so...eh.

So I would say, "It's okay just this once!" ;)

And then come back and post a picture! ;)

  • I've eaten plenty of runny eggs. Lots of places don't even make their own scratch hollandaise it comes from a bag. Hollandaise involves whisking the yolks over a hot water bath and warm butter. It is always held warm and tossed/used very quickly because it separates. I think at a reputable place it's not very risky at all but again it's a very personal choice.
  • Could you maybe inquire how it's made there before ordering? That's a tough one. I've always read it's a big no no but I can't see how risky it would be if prepared by a skilled chef using top ingredients?

  • I would allow myself the cheat. But I've also eaten runny eggs.
  • So, I ended up chickening out (ha) and didn't order the Eggs Benedict. I went with a scramble instead and it was very tasty! Weirdly enough I wasn't even in the mood for Eggs Benny at that point. My nausea kicked in this week and it sounded too rich for my tummy! Oh well. :)
  • I am glad the scramble was a tasty substitute, and I hope the nausea lets up for you!

I haven't into'd yet, still kinda lurking but I absolutely love eggs Benedict so I had to jump in on this one lol. I have eaten the occasional runny egg but even though you may not feel symptoms of listeria, it's deadly to a fetus, hence why these things are on the no-no list. But on that note, I've made sorta non homemade eggs Benedict with a few tweaks and it taste just as good as the restaurant style stuff. Definitely good enough to curb your cravings for it. I have a microwave poacher that cooks the yoke all the way through, then I get the hollandaise powder packets (like the gravy stuff) then add in a little cayenne pepper and paprika. I'm assuming those packets don't have raw egg in them but I guess I really don't know about that one. And of course your basic English muffin and fry up some Canadian bacon and your golden. And now I'm starving again and wish I had bought those muffins and the Canadian bacon when I was at the store yesterday :(( Hope this helps some of you get though how ever long until that precious little baby is born :) Edit: autocorrect typo fix
