Baby/Childrens Books

No...this is not about doing books instead of cards ;-P

BUT...I'm a big reader and I'd love to start building my daughter's library, so I'm planning to add some books to our registry.  However, being a FTM, I'm not exactly familiar with popular baby/children's books, so I need some suggestions.  I was thinking about adding about 10-15 books to give people an idea that 1. books are a welcome gift and 2. the style/range of books we are looking for in case they want to add some of their own favorites (ie, variety of age range).

So ladies, what are some book staples that you'd recommend for a library??  I'm thinking maybe 5 books for baby age, 5 for toddler age, and 5 for young child age to give a good representation of the range we'd like to start building.

  • In addition to the above, Eric Carle, Audrey Wood (particularly for preschool and early elementary interest), and David Shannon are great and they span various age groups.

I love the books "Flip Flap Fly" and "C is for CoCo". The "Good Night" series is really good too ("Good Night America", "Good Night World", plus the same for most states). Also love the classic Goodnight moon plus "Giraffes Can't Dance", "Chugga Chugga Choo-Choo", "Little Blue Truck", and "Tumble Bumble".

  • For babies I love Boss Baby, it is really funny so it is great for reading over and over:

For toddlers/little kids my DD and I love "I like myself". It's got great rhyming and a really nice message and really great illustrations as well:

On The Night You Were Born is my favorite.  DS's favorite is Curious George's Goodnight Book.
I read LO On The Night You Were Born most nights! It's our favourite.
Others no one has mentioned: Mercer Mayer (Little Critter books, I think they're hilarious), and Robert Munsch.
  • Our DD is 13 months, so we're still in the baby stage.  She LOVES the Jellycat books because she can turn the pages herself, chew on it, etc.  I've seen the Dino Tails and the Kitty Tails books, and both are pretty cute and are well made (they've made it this long and other than needing to be washed occasionally, are in good shape)

Otherwise, any of the books with texture & bright colors are good.

I like reading to her Harold & the Purple Crayon, Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear Brown Bear, and the Isabella series of books (since her name is Isabella, but I like the message).

  • The Spot series by Eric Hill.
  • Oh so many!! I work with infants and toddlers now and was a former pre-k teacher, so even though I am a FTM I have spent A LOT of time with children's books. :) I would register for a mix of board books and paper books, and also keep in mind that with more complex books the board book is a simplified version so you may want both versions (i.e. The Mitten). Some of my favorites are: ANYTHING Eric Carle, Ladybug Girl series, Where the Wild Things Are, Fancy Nancy books, On the Night You Were Born (or anything else by Nancy Tillman), and The Napping House. Also think about your interests and books that are culturally relevant. I love classic literature so I have stocked up on the "Baby Lit" books. My DH has already ordered books that follow his interests (mostly Red Sox and Star Wars books). We also live in Maine so we have already started a Maine authors collection and books about Maine. There is so much out there, jump on Amazon and browse through. They have sections for top rated, award winning, and based on your interests children's books.
