Baby Names

Opinions, please!

I have 4 baby names (2 boy, 2 girl), and I'm wondering what people think. Are they too rare? (PS: I promise, they are real names! Don't believe me, look them up. :) I have included origins and meanings of the first names too.

Boys:
Finnegan Robert  (Irish, meaning fair)
Cargan James (Irish, meaning little rock)

Girls:
Aislyn Grace (Irish, meaning vision/dream) i want to pronounce it ace- lynn, not ash- lynn.
Adelyn Kay (German, meaning noble beauty)

Please be honest, but kind!!!

Finnegan is my choice for boys.  It's not my favorite, but it's not bad either.

Cargan makes me think of sweaters because I automatically fill in the missing syllable.

If you want an Acelyn, name her that.  Aislyn will more than likely be pronounced Ashlyn, because the Irish name you've misspelled is pronounced Ashlyn.

I'm not a fan of Adelyn in any of its variants, but it's better than Aislyn.

Re: Opinions, please!

  • Finnegan is OK.

    I like Adeline or Adele.

  • I much prefer Finnegan to Cargan.

I like the spelling of Adelyn better as Adeline, but it's okay your way, I suppose.  As for Aislyn, I don't know much about Irish names except that they're tricky to Anglicize, but I think if you're neither spelling nor pronouncing a name in the way it would be spelled and pronounced in the original language, you're not really using an Irish name.

I didn't just make up the name Aislyn. There are many people that have also named their daughter that. And in English, most of the time "ai" makes a long "a" sound. "s" makes a "sss" sound, and "lyn" is a normal name of which i don't even have to break down. When you read it in the US, with a knowledge of letter sounds, it should come out 'ace- lynn'. How is there a mispronunciation in that? I do not live in Ireland, therefore, I shouldn't have much trouble with people butchering this name. you cannot even compare that to the word "mayonnaise" and pronouncing it "my own eyes" bc mayonnaise is pronounced just as it is written.... like aislyn.

I keep trying to find my post on here, but I realized that this is a double. Nothing wrong if it is, but it confused the heck out of me.

    The first was here.

Acelyn has been changed to Aislyn (Aislin).

Anyway, my suggestion from March 2 was:

Maybe an alternative for Acelynn could be Ainsley. https://www.behindthename.com/name/ainsley

    Aislyn/Aislin is Ash-lyn, not Ace-lyn.

Also, maybe Corbin for Cargan. https://www.behindthename.com/name/corbin

They wouldn't be "butchering" it, they would be pronouncing it correctly for the language you claim to have gotten it from.  I'll say again, if it's not spelled and pronounced as it would be in the Irish language, it's not an Irish name.  Which is fine, but I don't think you should claim it still is.

  • OP-- lots of people have named their kids Jaylee.  It doesn't make it any less of a made up name.  It's just two syllables slapped together, which is what you want to do.  You want to make up a name?  Up to you.  Just use the spelling Acelynn.

The problem is that you are taking a legit spelling of a foreign name and using it to legitimize your name choice.

It's like me saying I am naming my DD Siobahn and saying I want to pronounce it Cy-bin.  I should just spell it Cybin, then, yanno?

Not necessarily. Otherwise, island would be pronounced is-land because, you know, "knowledge of letter sounds" in the US.  It's not that cut-and-dry.

  • Finnegan Robert is nice.

I don't like either girl name. I also agree that you can't claim that the name is of Irish origin if you are going to misspell/mispronounce it. If you are going that route then just name her Acelyn. That way it won't be mispronounced. I don't know many people that would pronounce it the way you want them to. They would probably also think it's just another misspelled Irish name (which is rather trendy).

Someone is trying to argue their way out of their own objective wrongness with linguistic principles they don't understand. Unfortunately, a lot of people on this thread actually know a lot about linguistics. Your argument has received a: FAIL. If you're going to make up a name, just make it up, but own the fact that you're choosing to use a name that isn't real. Your kid will have to deal with that reality.
    FTW.

    Nice.

You know, I personally feel comforted to know that she will at least have a good story to tell her daughter about how she chose her name...
OP: Well, you see we were considering another name, but then all these biatches on the internet were all like, "You're spelling it wrong," so I was all like, "Fine, what about if I spell it right(ish) but pronounce it 'Merican?" and they were all like, "That's still wrong!" so I said, "Screw y'all, I can do whateva the hell I want cuz I have the maturity of a 13 year old and respond to criticism by becoming more determined to stay the course however misguided it may be and I don't care if my kid has a mispronounced name! Take that!" And that's how we picked your name, sweetie.

I just took a sip of water as I began to read this, and with the effort I used to not spit out my water, I hurt my head.  Thanks @bromios
