Baby Names

Would like opinions on girl names

So, we're having another girl. Will be a sister to Riley Abigail and Reagan McKenna (our last name has two syllables and begins with a "B"). We've come up with the following names, but I don't feel that definitive "this is it" feeling I felt with the other girls. Here's what we have so far:

  • Madison Ripley (my reservations, Madison is uber popular and a place name. Ripley reminds me of "Believe it or Not")
  • Brooklyn Mackenzie (my reservations, Brooklyn is a place name and seems to get a lot of flack on online discussion boards, Mackenzie is similar to McKenna)
  • Savannah Adeline (my reservations, Savannah is a place name, and is rather popular)
  • Cassidy Gracyn (my reservations, I'm not sure if I love the name Cassidy. I picked it because it was similar to Kennedy (which I like a lot), but I couldn't name my child a name that means "ugly head", so Kennedy is out)
  • Mackenzie Cheyenne (my reservations, I'm not in love with either name and Mackenzie is becoming rather popular, and is similar to McKenna. Perhaps if I found a middle name I loved with it?)
  • Gertrude Savannah (my reservations, well...Gertrude is such an old-fashioned name (it's my grandma's name))
  • Cordelia Madison (my reservations, my husband hates the name Cordelia, saying he's never heard it before. I guess I've seen Anne of Green Gables so many times that I have trouble thinking of it as anything other than a beautiful name...I think Cordelia would be my current front-runner, if hubby didn't dislike it so much.)

I'm still open to other names as well. I'm not sure that I've found "the" name for her yet. So, if you have another suggestion, I'd love to hear it! Let me know what you think of the names on my short list as well!

Thanks! :)

Re: Would like opinions on girl names

  • My husband isn't into the whole naming thing as much as I am. He says that since I'm the one carrying the baby for nine months, I get to ultimately choose the name. So, I think I could eventually talk him into Cordelia. The name he's been in love with is Ripley, which is why it's in the middle name of one of the names on the list (I just couldn't put it in as a first-name contender. I seriously still see Jack Palance every time I hear it). He also really likes Brooklyn and Madison.

Gertrude is an old lady name

I guess Savannah would be my pick if i had to pick one

My favorite on your list is Cordelia by far, but if your H doesn't like it then I would choose something else. I think Gertrude could maybe work if you used a NN like Trudy.
Yeah, that is what Gertrude has going for it - nickname potential. Trudy, Gertie, Tru, Dee.. (just not Gert or Rude...goodness, it's a hard name, isn't it?)

You don't have to pick one! I'm open to suggestions as well! I'm not at all sure I've found the name yet...
  • Gertrude!! Gertie!! Love it

    Cordelia is awesome.
Cassidy and savannah would be next.
Mackenzie is last because it's so close to McKenna.

  • Cordelia is the only one I like, but if your husband isn't on board, it won't work.

What about Beatrix, Rachelle, or Rosalie?

  • Cordelia is the only one I really like on your list.

  • What about Cassandra instead of Cassidy?

Love Cordelia also, and Gertrude nn Trudy/ie.

Also consider Claudia, Camilla, Marina, Serena, Samantha, Grace.  (Suggesting because they share some of the sounds of the names on your list.)

Your names are very trendy, which is not always a bad thing, but I would worry that in 20 years they're going to have the same kind of dated feel as (for example) Tiffany and Brittany do today.

I think Madison and Mackenzie are already feeling quite dated . . . I feel like they were very "it" names 10 years ago.

There is not a single combo here that I like. Cordelia and Cassidy are fine individually (obviously they would sound ridiculous together). Your DH probably likes Ripley because of Alien. Other ideas:
    Gwendolyn
Rosalind (maybe as a mn, so that you don't have all of your girls start with Rs)
    Rebecca (ditto)
    Beatrix
    Bronwen
    Morgan
    Mara
    Violet
    Kendra
    Madeleine
    Kiran

I also like Gwendolyn. It was voted down by my husband and girls early on in the baby naming process. I may bring it up to them again and see if it gets a better response.

My husband actually wants all of our girls' name to begin with the letter "R"! I think that's one reason he likes Ripley so much.

Several of these are names that I ruled out because they are already the names of friends/family (or occasionally enemies or those with unpleasant associations). I like Violet and Madeleine, though (and have no associations w/ either of them - except The Incredibles, of course). I'll add them to my list to run by my husband.

    Thanks!

Yeah, I worry about the 'trendy' thing as well. I want a name that kinda stands up, well, better than I think "Riley" will...

I was looking at the popular names - Madison has been in the top 10 since 1997, with the height of popularity about 10 years ago. I didn't realize that Mackenzie had been popular then as well. I always though about it as more of an 1980's sort of name (Mackenzie Phillips from One Day at a Time, Mackenzie Aston from The Facts of Life), but not as saturated as say, Jennifer was in the 1980's.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I really like to know what people think of the perspective names for our LO. I also like how everyone has been so positive and helpful in their comments (even if you don't like the names). I know I haven't responded to each of your responses personally, but I do appreciate all the replies!
  • I love Cordelia, with nickname options Cori or Delia.

I like Cassidy too! But not Gracyn. Just Cassidy Grace sounds great!

I really don't like any of the other names mentioned.

How about Sydney for a fn? Or Brooke?

I actually adore Sydney! However, it's already been taken in my family.. Maybe Brooke... Do you think Cassidy would sound better with my other girls' names? Riley, Reagan and Cassidy - they're all Irish surnames, so they seem to fit. Would Cordelia stick out like a sore thumb w/ my other girls' names?

Love Cordelia especially after this season of American horror story. However, I'm not sure it's the same style as your other girls.

I like savannah according to the names of your other girls. I think it fits best

  • Cordelia is my favorite from your list. The rest are really not good and border on stripper names.

If your husband is set on an R how about Reese?

I guess I'm not as familiar with stripper names as you are! I really don't like Reese, but my husband always has. I just couldn't imagine naming a child after my daughter's favorite candy bar, but I guess it isn't any stranger than a city name.

Hmmm...I didn't watch that show, so I'm not familiar with the connection. Is it problematic? I've always liked Savannah (ever since I was a little girl). I'm glad to hear you think it works alright with my other girls' names!

I don't think it's problematic at all! In the show she is the epitome of "good." Plus, it's just a silly show anyways.

Cassidy goes great with the others! Yes, Cordelia sticks out a little... But not enough that if you love the name it should dissuade you from using it.
