October 2013 Moms

i've got two questions.

1) "people" are already feeding their LO's purees?  at 4ish months? I thought the 4 month deal was rice cereal only (which is still ridic).

2) "people" are already putting their kids sitting up in shopping carts?  you must have to be 100% on alert that they don't careen forward/backward/sideways?  I mean my LO has some good strength but still loses his motor shiz and plops over when i hold him.   I know he is younger that some, but i still don't feel like they have perfected strength to hold themselves up in a shopping cart yet.  EXPLAIN

Re: i've got two questions.

  • I've been wondering the same thing, or at least w/ the shopping cart thing. DS is over 5.5 months (6 weeks early) and can't sit up on his own yet. I was shocked when I saw some LOs sitting up unassisted. He's not even close.

  • No shopping cart for us. She has great control, but I think she would be bouncing around in there. Baby wearing FTW. I am gonna try some baby oatmeal just in case I ever have to leave. She won't take a bottle so if she was starving maybe she could have a little of that.

  • Not to hijack, but to those of you with "older" babies, to what degree do you factor in their "adjusted" age?
Like, if your LO is 6 months old, but was 6 weeks early, do you look for expected milestones for a 4.5 month old or a 6 month old? And/or, at which age do they trend toward?
Obviously everything is a spectrum/range, but I've wondered if some people need to adjust their expectations.
  • We haven't done purees but we got the green light to start solids. We started with rice cereal and could do what we wanted. She loves to suck on my pear.

I am a shopping cart putter inner. My cover has a strap that goes around his belly, so he doesn't lean forward, and then the backrest supports his back and I put a rolled up blanket on one side of him and my purse on the other side of him. He doesn't move at all, and he LOOOOOVES it. Obviously, I stay right there next to him and just sort of chuck the things into the cart (I don't, like, leave him chilling and go stand in line for the deli counter or anything). He truly can't move from this position, with the way he's wedged in there. I'll accept my flames with dignity.

ETA: Not sure how clear it is here, but the backrest of the cart actually comes up to the base of his head, so his head is supported from behind.

Super adorable :) I'm excited to put DS in a cart when it gets warmer here. What kind of cover is that @sleepy33 ?

  • I got the green light from my ped. For solids- and I fully ignored him. Then he lost some credibility when he told me to do it so LO can sttn, not for nutrition. I am taking a solids seminar tomorrow for shits and giggles, but won't start till six months.

The carts scare me but holy are all the babies different! @letsgotodisney: can't believe she is pulling herself up!

On 2/6 doc suggested started cereals based on her development. Also gave green light for other foods. More as practice and tastes and not as nutritional base. We've only done carrots a few times and very little at that <1tbs.

I'm ordering her cart seat thingy on friday because she can sit very well with little help and I believe that she will do much better "helping" me shop as oppposed to being in her car seat.

She will be 20wks on sat.

Eta; A's pedi and I had a long discussion on starting foods, iron stores, allergies, etc before I made the choice to start slowly introducing cereal and such. It wasn't to sttn, it wasn't because she's a monster eater. She is showing signs of being ready and I'm working with her cues. (She's sttn since 9 weeks. )

Eh. I've thinking about trying it. I've have an über padded one and she is ::thisclose:: to sitting up unassisted. She sits more gorilla style right now. Lol.

Neither. He will be 5 months on the 3rd, but adjusted age is 4 months. I don't really look at the milestone markers, though our ped says he is right on target for most everything. He isn't quite stable enough for sitting in a cart (or his death trap) without assistance. Head control is getting there, but when he is upset (and oh God he has my quick temper) then head control goes out the window. Same for when he is excited.

Substitute ped gave green light for cereals, but I'm waiting until 6 months and then doing BLW, though I did buy some oatmeal cereal to try as well. Flame away, but he watches me eat mine every day and now tries to steal it, so I figure he can have some of his own down the road. I'll be introducing slowly, because of my horrible childhood allergies. I have fought so hard with this BFing and having to supplement, that I know I can at least do one more month.

I look for all milestones at the adjusted age. Growth spurts have me confused; I don't know wtf is going on with him sometimes in that sense. I don't know if we've had the 4mw or if it's still to come (*shudder*).

I just filled out the development tracking questionnaire from Early Intervention, and it seems like he's mostly on track except for some motor skills (rolling, in particular). Granted, I was supposed to fill it out at 4 months and they didn't send it to me until well into the 5th month, so he's basically 6 weeks behind, I think.
I also don't know how to track growth spurts. LO will be 7 months on Monday, but was 10 weeks early, so adjusted is 4.5 months (duh). There are some things she is doing at actual age and others she's behind and closer to adjusted. It's hard to say how much being a preemie will impact her development.

Sucks bc I think of her as being 7months and worry sometimes when I see the other LOs on here sitting up and stuff...I forget about that whole born super early thing sometimes...
  • We haven't started food yet but my doc said to skip the cereal and go to veggies first... Then fruit. She said the cereal has little nutritional value. Eh. I would imagine every doc has their own opinion.

  • LO has not been in the shopping cart yet, but he sits up pretty well when supported.  I don't think it will be much longer before he is sitting on his own.  I was leery of the cart, but from the above pics the babies look comfy and happy.  I think with this, every baby is different.  I did totally side eye a lady I saw when I was pregnant.  Her baby looked about 3 months old, in the front of the cart with no cart cover or support and was slumped over badly.

As for purees, LO will be having his first tonight.  He will be 5 months old 2/5.  Pedi said rice cereal at 4 month appointment, and I said no.   I'm not saying that at this point of age all babies are ready for purees, but I've researched and watched my child, and I feel the time is right.

Gave DS peas this week.  Tounge thrust was gone and I used this teether thing that came in this months Citrus Lane box.  I love that he was figuring out to put it to his mouth and suck.

I haven't put him in the shopping cart yet.  I kinda like when he's passed out in his carseat.  Even though I have no room its so much more relaxing to shop at Target while he's sleeping.

  • No purées yet for us. LO is one of the younger though (born 10/24). We have his 4 month appointment on Friday and the pedi said we would discuss a plan for solids. Honestly, I'm holding off as long as possible. This will probably win me mother of the year, but we are going to Florida the first week of April (he'll be 5.5 months) and bringing the supplies for formula is enough for me to worry about. I don't want to have to deal with everything we would need to bring for purées.

No shopping cart for us. He can't sit unassisted. I probably will not try it until we are no longer using the Infant carrier.

  • My LO is 5 months and we started purees. So far just sweet potatoes. We got the green light from the pedi and he was showing signs if being ready so went for it. He did great and loves it! No regrets here.

  • DS is 5.5 months & we started small amounts of purees last week. He's been watching us eat intently & trying to grab our food for at least 2 months now. He does really well & grabs the spoon if I'm not fast enough. It definitely doesn't help him sleep any longer (he's been up every 2 hours since we moved him to the crib) but he likes it.

I tried to put him in the cart once cause the car seat is so damn heavy now & takes so much of the cart. He was so tiny in there & he kept trying to reach for things so I ended up just holding him cause he was making me nervous.

S is almost 5m old. He gets oatmeal cereal in the am and we are doing veggies at night. So far he doesn't like/spits out squash. He loves green beans and sweet potatoes. Will be trying carrots in a few days.

I'll be making his food soon. Time to break out the food processor, containers and steamer.

  • What's the verdict on oatmeal cereals? Are you guys using "baby" oatmeal or just reg oatmeal? We've been doing rice cereal (for the iron) but in would like to get away from it at some point.

Yes, baby oatmeal. It has plenty of iron in it.
No one wants rice for breakfast.

  • I baby wear so no shopping cart here. DS does sit up unassisted. He is 5 months though.

We have dallied around with purees and some solids. I did some purees and then decided I want to do baby led weaning. He had literally had purees two times (so like 10 spoonfuls all together) and a cucumber, carrot, peace of cabbage, and a mushroom. The food is basically like another toy to him right now. Although he did go for it with the mushroom today haha.

That was literally my exact thought. If I can provide her with some extra iron and not feed her rice with the consistency and sticky power of wall paper glue I will be a happy mama.
