OHSS?

I got a phone call from the RE and he said that after the U/S I show 20 follies on one side and 25 on the other and he's afraid of OHSS. Since this is my first IVF i'm not too sure what to expect. Will he prescribe less meds because of this? I read somewhere on here about gatorade helping, any thing else that would help? He also stated if that were to happen I would have to wait until June for ET because my body would need one month to rest. I don't really want to wait until June since I've waited 8 years to be here at this point, these things are so complicated. If it's not one thing it's another. IVF isn't until April and I'm already stressing, not a good sign :(

I'm not sure if the RE will prescribe less meds.

I just went through my 2nd retrieval cycle and have no experienced OHSS myself but the nurses did recommend salty foods, gatorade. and soups with broth.

My RE was concerned about OHSS my first IVF. They didn't change my stims, but they did have me trigger with Lupron instead of HCG.

The doctors and nurses at my office strongly believe there isn't anything you can do to prevent it, however they agree that Gatorade and lots of protein can help lessen the effects of it.

I've been in your shoes and did develop OHSS after IVF#1.  I had 37 eggs retrieved in my first IVF last March and had to wait until June to try FET.  While it is no fun to do more waiting, you do want your body/uterus to be in tip-top shape before they put the embryos back in.  Good luck to you!!

    TTC since 9/2011. DH - 32, me 32.

IUI#1 (natural): BFN; IUI#2 (clomid): BFN; IUI#3 (clomid and follistim): BFN.

IVF #1 March 2013, freeze all (OHSS).

    FET#1 June: BFN

FET#2 August: delayed due to thin lining (6.3).  Took a few months off to try and thicken the lining with lots of estrodial.  FET#2.2 December: Cancelled due to thin lining (4.8). Two frosties left.

*New RE* Sonohystrogram and hystereoscopy done in Feb.

IVF #2: ER 3/4/14  ET 3/7/14, transferred 3, 3 day 9 cell perfect embryos.  No frosties.

    Beta #1 (14dp3dt) 504

    Beta #2 (21dp3dt) 11,561

First ultrasound on 4/3/14 showed 3 sacs: one empty and two with beating hearts!!  At 7w2d, found out that one baby did not have a heartbeat anymore.  Praying that baby B makes it.  Baby B is a girl!

    EDD 11/25/14 BORN 11/29/14

**PAIF/anyone welcomed to comment!!  Thank you.

I had the same concern from my docs - as I responded much better than they ever assumed i would.  Basically they gave me the choice keeps the meds the same to get the most follicles but up the risk for OHSS or lower the meds possibly decreasing the # of follies and the risk for OHSS - but it could still happen

I went with option A... and basically asked the same question on this board... and the ladies gave me some great advice.  As much as the idea of waiting a month really sucks... but you want your body in the best shape possible for your embryos!

I didn't end up with OHSS but to prevent I was told by my doc to drink between 2 - 3 liters of fluid a day... and no strenuous exercise.  I also have to weigh myself daily to ensure i don't gain 4lbs within 48 hours... they gave me a whole check list that i'm suppose to go through every day... but it's mostly to catch OHSS if it happens more than prevent.

i'm sorry you have a possibility of doing a freeze all - I know it can be devastating when you first hear its a possibility and this process is long enough without having to tack on another month.  FX you are ok and can go with a fresh cycle

Jumping in from PAIF. i had 31 eggs retrieved during our fresh cycle and didnt get OHSS but it was also a BFN. When I did get OHSS on a separate occasion I drank lots of powerade and ate a lot of pickles and other salty foods due to your capillaries being drained of them. I ended up needing to get 2L drained. If they suggest a freeze all with a later transfer Id do it..OHSS is pretty awful. Also FETs have often shown higher success after letting your body calm down.
