One of my LOs has an umbilical hernia. It doesn't bother me, but my DH is worried it will never go away. Our DR asured us that most go away on their own. But out of curiousity did/does your LO have a umbilical hernia? Has your LO's umbilical hernia closed yet?

Re: Umbilical Hernia Poll

  • DS doesn't have one but DD has/had one. Her's herniated when she was 2 weeks old. Hers slowly began to close as her abdominal muscles developed. Around her 2nd birthday it was basically closed. Her belly button is now even with her belly so it doesn't stick out but it isn't an innie either.

  • A has one. It doesn't seem to stick out as much now as it did when he was born. Dr said it should go away on its own before he turns 2. I'm not that worried.

  • DD1's occured when she was a few weeks old, and she still has it now at 4.5.  But, it is much, much better than it was when she was a baby.  Its no big deal, it doesn't hurt her at all.  It just looks like an outie bellybutton now.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • DS 1 has an umbilical and epigastric hernia.  They thought the umbilical would close on its own by the age of 5.  He is now 6 and they are both still there.  Pedi is not worried as they are not bothering him and his bowels are fine.  Still worries me though no that he is in sports and getting hit hard enough in the stomach area would  be bad.

  • My dd #2 had one. It was the type that doesn't usually go away on its own, so hers was surgically repaired at 18 months. She's now 3 and good as new. :)
