1st Birthday

No I'm not planning ours yet! We still have a few moths obviously. But some friends of our have a son who is turning 1 this week (party next weekend) and from hearing her talk this party is going to be quite big. I'm talking 2-3 outfits for the baby, 2 cakes, tons of food, decorations, photographer, etc. Am I missing something, I mean is this the norm for a 1st birthday? H and I kind of feel like he's not going to remember so why go all out but everyone keeps telling us he only turns 1 once. I totally get it but why spend thousands on something he won't remember? What do you ladies think, go all out or small and simple?

Re: 1st Birthday

  • We had about 60 adults (plus about 15 kids under 5) for my daughters first. It's a big deal around here! No outfit changes though.

  • First birthday's tend to be big around here as well.  My friend just threw her LO a circus themed party and  most of the entertainment there was too big for him to even use or enjoy!

While I plan to have a nice party for LO, I don't plan on laying down tons of cash for it.  My mom is a party planning extraordinaire so she can pull of awesome for cheap.

  • I don't plan on going to that extent. We do, however, spend more and invite more people to the first birthday party. I have maybe 30 people but only 1 cake and no outfit changes unless he ruins the first.

  • We invite family and our closest friends (7 couples) to our house for a cookout, cake, and presents. Then we do something similar at my parents house since my family and friends are there (3 hours away).
We don't call all out. We keep it casual and relaxed. It's just how our families are.

  • Go big or go home over here for the 1st bday! But not two cakes.

  • Just immediate family for us. That's like 30 people... Which is plenty!

  • I don't know what we'll do yet. I don't love hosting parties and our house isn't the best for it. I'd like to be able to say I did something for her so I think I'll at least aim to do a small gathering. I have a hard time knowing where to draw the line with who to invite, though, so it might end up bigger than I'd like. It certainly won't be a thousands of dollars affair, though! No hired entertainment or rented venues. Just snacks at my house and a cake.

  • We will just be doing something small. I don't know where we will be living so it might just be DH, LO, and me. I think people get carried away and gift grabby. My husbands brother a SIL threw their daughters first B-day and invited both of their entire FB friends list @-) I was honestly happy I had to work.

I guess we won't be going ALL out but we will probably have about 30 people. I will get her a cute outfit and possibly order a cake. I would also LOVE a piñata...because who WOULDN'T love a piñata?

Eta: but I wouldn't get ponies or something outrages..that's RHW style.

  • We planned on doing just a small BBQ in the backyard with closest family and friends. It does total to be around 30-50 people but both our parents are divorced so that of course adds up quickly. It won't be fancy and lucky enough our backyard is pretty big. 1 cake 1 outfit (unless he messes his up) and no party favors.
  • we had about 30 people , a 'robot' theme a cute cake etc... No photographer or outfit changes though what the heck.

  • We go big for 1st bday, For DS we had about 40ish people and 30 kids…. we got lucky and I got a jump house for the back yard, set up crafts in basement, Dance revolution on…. baby sitters to monitor the downstair craziness (there were kids of all ages). It was a Rock star theme and kids came dressed as rock stars (DS had just 1 outfit) Food for kids and adults…. wine/beer. It was a LOT of fun and DS had no clue what was going on. We will go big for DD's 1st too.
  • Audrey's first birthday was pretty big. We invited all of our friends and family. I think we had like 75 people. We didn't have a hired photographer or anything like that though. We just made a ton of food and had water games. I made cake balls for the cake and ordered a smash cake from a local bakery. The decorations were very Pinterest inspired.

I was really proud of it. We did something annular for her second bday but it was also a "come see our new house" party and a "baby k 2.0 sex reveal" party. Lol

Her third will not be as big. I'm going to attempt to tone it down a bit.
  • We'll probably have a pretty decent sized party, like 30-40. Two cakes but that's including a little one for ds and then one for everyone else. Ds will probably get an outfit dirty so if you want to count that as an outfit change, then it would be I guess. I'm hoping that with it being early October we can go to the park and rent the pavilion.

  • Wow you guys throw some big parties! We will have immediate family - which is about 8-10 adults and 3 kids, maybe one or two other friends that have kids and that's probably it. Most of our friends aren't married and don't have kids so they probably wouldn't be too into a baby party. I don't really like parties honestly, so we'll keep it low key.

  • Around here the amount of 1st bday hooplah varies. Since no one has a apt bigger enough for a party usually it's either small at home or medium-big at a rented space or bar/restaurant. We are chill, so we'll probably do it at a large local beer hall that is kid friendly. (I've been to about 5 kids parties there in the past 2 years) We'll supply some food/beer/cake but nothing crazy. If it was warm enough I would do something at a big park, but early Oct in NYC is chancey.

If we have 20 people that would be a lot (our family lives out of state so it would just be friends...A handful of babies around the same age too)
I know we're far off but I think I want to do a monster theme. (We call LO Henry Hugglemonster sometimes... plus it's right before Halloween)
I'll probably do the smash cake and then order a nice one for everyone.
If we (finally) purchase a grill this year I'd think to just do burgers and stuff. Keep it simple.

  • It's a pretty big deal for people I know...I mean as in big party with extended family and friends. But don't plan on outfit changes or multiple cakes, that's a little much.

  • I have a lot of friends and host parties often so we will probably have a big BBQ sort of thing.  The beginning of Oct is always great weather, I think 50ish people total.  I make crazy cakes so I'd make something fun.  I don't think I would have outfit changes.  And I have a bunch of friends with fancy cameras always taking great pics so no hired photographer.  I do think I want a fun theme and actual paper invites.

  • We had about 40 people for a backyard BBQ. It wasn't super fancy but was pretty darn expensive when all was said and done. Skye's might be smaller because of the time of year and how many people can fit in the house lol.

  • I really wasn't planning on doing anything big for DD's first birthday.  I thought something small with just us and some family time would be great.  However, dh has a huge family and they keep asking me what I'm going to do for DD's first birthday.  I've always been creative and I think they expect me to do big parties.  Even if I wanted to just do aunts and uncles and immediate family we'd have 40+ people.  I'm not sure yet.  I'd love to do a backyard bbq, but we'll see what the weather is like when it gets closer.

I definitely want to celebrate her birthday, but to be honest, I'd rather put that money into her savings than have an elaborate birthday that she wont remember.

  • Probably nothing. LOL

MIL and my mom both have October birthdays so we'll acknowledge DS's when we see them for theirs.

  • I'm already dreading this.  I'm curious how well it will go over having my mom and stepmom in the same house since they hate each other, and then there's my dad and stepdad that haven't seen/spoken to each other in 30 years and avoid each other at all cost.  Then there's my MIL that pretty much hogs LO all the time, even when other family is around.  And FIL always just walks around talking on his phone.  Then we have my screeching parrot that hates visitors.  Do we have to invite anyone?  :)

  • I'm going memorable and small. We have to plan early because it will be a lot of travel for people involved and I'm making 90% of it with my crafting cutter and embroidery machine. So doing a little at a time so last minute I'm not all stressed out. But memorable and simple the way to go!
    Thank you,
