Baby Names

Putting my baby girl names out there. Opinions please!

First child for both my husband and I-we are due with a baby girl in August and my husband and I have two names at the top of our list. We are keeping these names to ourselves until she is born.  We love love love the first name Sosie.  We used to watch The Closer with Kyra Sedgewick when we were dating, well her daughter IRL is named Sosie and we thought that was the sweetest name ever. 5 years later and we still are in love with the name.  Middle name will be Marcella (pronounced Mar-sella not Mar-chella) after my hubs dear grandmother who passed away the week before we found out we were pregnant. She would have been over the moon to be a great-grandmother.  2nd choice is Quinn Marcella.  So what do you think? Not traditional, but not so odd that she would suffer the curse of a bad name the rest of her life, right??

Sosie Marcella
Quinn Marcella

Thanks in advance ladies!

  • Don't like both. Sorry.

  • @gabrielle77 That's okay! I figure there will be some opposition-I'm open to suggestions too. Thanks anyway for your input! :)
  • I love the MN especially with the meaning. I actually love the name Quinn. I'm not big into unisex names on boys but that's just my style. The name itself is nice. Not big into Sosie.

Not a fan of Sosie. It sounds too little girl NN to me and I don't think it would age well. Not positive how it's pronounced, but if it's like I think it is, Josie as a NN for Josephine would be a nice alternative. I think Josephine Marcella is a wonderful name.

I'm just not a fan of Quinn at all, but especially not for a girl.

  • @bobcee Yes it's pronounced like Josie. Thanks for your reply!
  • I don't like Quinn on a girl at all. I'm not sure about sosie yet. I've never heard it so I'll need time to process.

Is it pronounced so-see or so-zee?

I don't really like either, but I think Sosie is okay. Since both fn and mn mean so much to you, I say use it. My first thought when I saw it though was that you spelled Susie a different way, so her name might be mispronounced a lot.

  • @westisleflower I am concerned about her being called Susie. I am well aware that it will happen if we go forward with this name so that is a big drawback for me. My bro-in-law's sister is a Susie and I can't effing stand her! She is a dreadful person. Thanks for your input!
  • @==N== Pronunciation can go either way. We would pronounce So-zee most likely.
  • I don't love the FN picks but love Marcella! Ultimately, if it's the name you and dh have always loved I'd pick Sosie.
  • I love Quinn, super cute.
  • I like the name Quinn but for a boy. I don't like the other one at all

  • Sosie Marcella :)

If you've loved a name that long, then why question it? Sounds like it's meant to be, and the middle name is special.. perfect combo!

  • I like Sosie, and Sosie Marcella sounds very nice to me.

I'm not a huge fan of Quinn on a boy or girl. No real reason.

@bromios Thanks for your reply. Sosie is not a made up name. It's a diminutive of Susan, Susie, Suzanne, Shoshannah, etc. I realize it's not a formal or traditional name but my husband and are aren't formal or traditional people. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them!

    :)
  • I'm sorry to say, but I don't like Sosie. I understand you saying it is a real name, but I don't think it will sound like a real name to most people because it's not recognizable. I think it sounds cutesy, and I'm just not a fan. That being said, I do love Josie as a nn for Josephine.

I actually do like Quinn, so that gets my vote. I know a lot of people will say it's traditionally a boys name, but IMO it has become perfectly unisex. I think it's pretty, and recognizable.

  • When I saw Sosie I assumed you had misspelled Sophie, so my vote would be for Quinn. (Josie is adorable too)
  • I have never heard the name Sosie before, but we chose Quinn for our LO

  • Right off the bat, not even reading anything (even the other responses) I like Sosie better than Quinn. But it sounds like a NN to me, so I google it. It is a NN for Susan. My suggestion: name your daughter Susan and call her Sosie.

After reading the responses of others to your thread: my opinion hasn't changed but I liked @nittanymama suggestions!

  • Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions! My name list is very much a work in progress as we're not due until August. Stay tuned!
  • Would you consider using Sosie as a nn for something else, perhaps one of the other names you mentioned?  It is cute but might be too cutesy for a grownup who wants to score a job as a lawyer or engineer or something.
  • I thinj if you both love Sosie regardless of what anyone thinks you should go with it. I used to love the name Quinn it just got a little too popular for me lately.

  • neither my style, but I like the middle name. I pronounce Sosie as so-zee...and i'm sure i'm not the only one. I never heard of that name until now. If you love it, and don't mind correcting people everytime they say her name, then go for it

  • I have never heard Sosie before and am actually surprised that I really like it. It is not my style to like a name that is so nicknamey/ juvenile sounding and unique, but I like it!
