Alcohol and breastfeeding

My dh and I are hosting a mini college reunion for his udel friends and I wanted to inquire regarding drinking while breastfeeding. I'm reading that you have to wait two hour for alcohol to clear your system before nursing for the baby to not get alcohol. So if I pump and then have a drink and wait three hours to pump I should be ok? Can I then have another drink after I pump that time when my lo goes to bed for the night without affecting my milk for the morning?

Re: Alcohol and breastfeeding

  • From my understanding, that plan is totally fine.

  • If you're legal to drive, baby can nurse safely with minimal alcohol in the milk. Alcohol metabolizes out of breastmilk the same rate as blood, so one drink per hour is the general rule.

  • Last night I had two glasses of wine and pumped 1.5 hours later.  My dd is completely fine.
  • Honestly, the biggest risk with alcohol is getting drunk and dropping your baby. Even if you are at the legal limit .08, your blood and therefore breast milk is .08% alcohol. That is less than most juice.

  • @jgslr I had a drink last night while nursing dd. I took so long to drink it though it was getting watered down.
