It's finally Thursday!  It finally got interesting, right?  I'm headed out the door, but I'll be back this afternoon to participate.  Just wanted to start the thread so you could chat it up!

Good point @mapleme. I didn't even think about the vagueness and the connection.
I was shocked by how aggressive the sharks became. I think shark week has really desensitized us to the real danger of sharks. And I was very amused by their attempt to eat an albatross, and the lice he got from one bird.
I can't believe they all survived the plane attack! I can only imagine their heartbreak though after surviving so very much, only to end up in this death sentence prison.

Talk about surviving in the wild. The ocean has to be one of the toughest to survive due to lack of water.

And yet you are completely surrounded by it. What a tease! I remember hearing about people lost at sea like that dying bc they drink the water anyway out of desperation and not being completely lucid.

I think Phil and Louie had several advantages over Mac-. They trained together and worked together on many missions. Mac was a recent replacement who had never seen combat-the other 2 had survived a near fatal assault.

Plus Mac had the guilt situation. It seems like that really ate at him, pardon the pun.

No, it wasn't part of their training. I thought Louie mentioned learning about how the brain was a muscle in a class he took in college. So he decided they needed to keep it active before they went crazy.

Me too. They say desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm sure in that type of situation you can get very creative.

By missed you mean skimmed jk. The Island man also taught him about sharks.

There must have been something really special about the friendship that Lou and Phil had established prior to the crash, that helped them keep each other going. Even as they tried to take care of Mac, I think the history that they already had with each other probably contributed to their ability to survive the ordeal.

One of the other survival stories referenced here has a pretty good book about it: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. It's a good read, and I particularly remember it for the story being told against a modern understanding of what happens to the body and mind as it goes through starvation and dehydration.
