EPers: How often do you pump?

I currently pump every 3-4 hours because I've been trying to build up my supply (my child is a tank!), but am hoping to cut back sessions soon.  How often do you pump, and how did you make the transition to less sessions without losing volume?

Thanks,

Tiff

Re: EPers: How often do you pump?

  • Every 4 hrs down from every 2 hours up till 2 weeks ago. My supply finally came in around 10 weeks thankfully and at that point I was able to reduce.

  • I pumped every 3-4 hours until 10 weeks when I returned to work. Now I'm starting to ween and drop pumps because I'm going to stop at 3 months. My OB did say since I couldn't pump every 3-4 hours at work (I'm a teacher) that it was really important to pump more often at home (possibly every 2 hours) to keep the supply up.

  • I was pumping every two hours for 20-30 minutes until last week, which was week 6 for me. I now push it to 3-4 hours. I think I'm even too early for cutting it back this much, but I keep track of my ounces and if I notice a decrease I'll increase my pumping again.  I got great advice on the BF board. They suggested that you should pump every 2-3 hours for the first 12 weeks to build a steady supply.

  • i supplement w/ formula.  i pump 3-4 x day.  you'll probably lose some volume if you decrease the times per day - i think that's just inevitable.

  • I pump every 2-3 hours, more around the 3 hours depending if baby wakes early. It is working very well for me, it's just really tiring when you have to stay up to pump and feed the baby in the middle of the night! But my baby is only a weeks and a 2days old and I pump around 2oz/breast. A few times i have gotten 2.5oz/breast and I just store 2.5oz because that's all im feeding him right now. The pedi said that eventually my supply will not get better, but i think she's wrong. If you keep emptying your milk ducts your breast will think it needs more and keep up/increase the supply (i use an electric pump and it uses the same sucking motion as the baby would).

At first i thought that it wasn't going to work, but it is working great!?
