Mila vs Milena as First Name

DH and I really like Mila Grace (pronounced Mee-lah). I have been going back and forth between Milena (Mil-eena), which is the full name for Mila, or just naming her Mila. My great grandmother's name was Lena, so it would be nice to give a nod to her. Grace comes from my dad's side of the family.

Mila Grace
Milena Grace (NN Mila)

Thoughts?

FWIW, DS's name is Cameron.

  • I think either one works, depending on your preference and if you want to honor your g-gma. I prefer Mila.

I prefer Mila. For some reason I see Mirena whenever I see Milena.
I do, too, actually! I've tried to ignore it, but the iud name is still there. So, that is on the back of my mind. I would say I've been leaning towards Mila more than Milena, but the "Lena" part is what has kept the possibility of Milena still there. I have Lena as my MN and am thinking I should just let it be that. If DD or her daughter want to carry it on, then that would be great.

  • I actually really like Milena! It's very unique! Mila is fine too but it's nice to have the option of a longer name and nicknames - either Mila or Lena which she might like when she gets older.

Based on how you'll pronounce them, I like Mila better. I only like Milena when it's mee-leyna. But if you want to honor gma I'd just use Milena and call her Mila.

    Mila is beautiful.

I love Mila and I lone Lena.

Me too - curse of being in the medical field. I actually met a woman whose name was Melena... Unfortunate. :-/

  • My nieces name is milena, but it's pronounced "me-lena", which I prefer to mil-eena. But that being said, we all call her Mila.

Why don't you name her milena to honor your relative, but call her mila for short if you prefer it?
  • I like Mila.

Milena just makes me think of Mirena, the IUD.

  • I've always pronounced it Me-LEN-a and I like it with that pronunciation but not as Me-LEEN-a.  Mila is a lovely name.

  • I wish Lena were an option, but DH is not a fan. Milena was my way of compromising, but the further along I get in this pregnancy, I'm over compromising! :)

I am not in the medical field, so I had to Google "Melena". Yikes.
