Anyone in the dental field?

I was wondering if you were trying to limit exposure to nitrous oxide? I administered it yesterday to a patient for around 45 minutes. I knew it was contraindicated in pregnancy but thought since we have a scavenging system I would be fine administering it. So now I am worried about the baby being exposed to it. Anyone have any experiences?

Re: Anyone in the dental field?

  • Yes I am. Im a hygienist. Ehh it's one of those " if you feel comfortable" things. When I was in hygiene school we had a pregnant student and she administered. She just didn't take it herself when we switched.
I've administered with all my pregnancies except one office where the scavenger system was older than me and I refused to go near it pregnant or not.
I know in my current office they say I shouldn't but I don't mind because I don't donit a lot and the scavenger system is up or date. If I ever felt dizzy or weird from administering I probably wouldn't do it.
Also remember to remind pt to breathe threw their nose not their mouth
    1st loss 8/31
2nd pregnancy -TWINS lost DD1 twin at 8 weeks 6 days DD1 born 6 weeks early
3rd pregnancy- TWINS AGAIN lost both babies at 9 week appt
4th pregnancy- singleton- born at 38 weeks 1 day with the help of weekly 17P injections
    5th pregnancy- CP in June
    6th pregnancy It's a BOY

  • I was a vet tech at an animal hospital and did dentals on animals.  Can you get a mask?  They do have some that have filters on them to help more.  I know some of the vets would where them when they were pregnant.  Also how is the scavenger system, if it is good I would be less worried.  How often do you have to work with it?  can you limit your time with it?

I didn't work with nitrous oxide just anesthetics Sevo and Iso so the Vets I worked with tried to limit the amount of time they were around it just to be on the safe side and they always wore masks.  Especially when they were pulling teeth since the mouth was right there  along with the gas.

I think it all depends on how comfortable you feel.  I would chat with your Dr as well just to make sure.
