Baby Names

Woke up wanting to change the name....

So I'm 26 weeks and we decided on Colette a couple of months ago.  My 2 year old son cutely refers to the baby as "baby Colette" and my husband has finally really started to feel attached to this name.  I even ordered a bunch of small personalized stuff.  But I have gotten some weird feedback on how people pronounce it.  Almost everyone I talk to say they pronounce it like Cuh-lette (like Nicolette, without the Ni- syllable), where as I want to pronounce it Coh-lette or coal-ette.   Now I feel drawn to the name Magnolia, with Colette as a middle name.  My husband likes Magnolia too, but feels we already found our name.  Any opinions on either name?

Re: Woke up wanting to change the name....

  • I guess I just don't want to have name regret after she is born too...maybe I am just having a weird day though!

  • I've always pronounced it Coal-ette, and actually adore this name. Magnolia is a ok name as well.

I think 1: pronunciation will fall in,one as people get yo know her, and 2: you shouldn't change it based on just one day of bad feelings. You're only 26 weeks, give yourself and your H time to think it over and talk it out.the right name is the name you both love.

  • Colette is one on my favorite names.
  • I think it's tough if people have already become attached to the name. But it would be much easier to change your mind now rather than after she's born. That said, I absolutely love both names, you can't go wrong.

  • Thanks for the feedback! My husband doesn't really love discussing names and I think he just wants to be 100% settled. I on the other hand enjoy figuring out the process.... Although know I am driving myself a but crazy, I'm glad for the most part there is a warm reception to either name.
  • I prefer Colette over Magnolia. I say stick with your gut

  • I would pronounce it Kah-lette in my Midwest accent. Underused name and cute. I think it's a winner. She may never be in a class with another Colette which a bonus. I personally do not like Magnolia. I don't think it would look reputable on a business card in 30 years. Unless she went by Maggie or something.
  • Keep it! It will be fine. I haven't heard the name in awhile!
  • I like Collette (and Magnolia too TBH) and FWIW I would pronounce it Coh-let.

  • Colette is my middle name. I usually say Coal-ette but have heard pronounced different ways. I'm even unsure how to pronounce it when I hear other people use another pronunciation. It's a pretty name, unusual, and you should still use it.
  • I adore Colette. Magnolia is very nice too though.

  • I think whoever mis-pronounces it are few and far between. I would pronounce is Coal-ette. I think its a beautiful, classic name. Dont 2nd guess it. Maybe use magnolia as a middle name.

  • Mongolia, another name to add to the mix! Hehe...I asked my 2.5 year old what name he likes more.  He doesn't refer to anyone as "she"...everyone is a "he".  So I ask "Do you like Colette or Magnolia for the baby name?".  He replies "Magnolia" (my heart smiles a little)  Three second pause. "I don't like him".  I think I'm going to put the names on the back seat for a few weeks and re-assess then, but it seems like everyone around me likes Colette.

Honestly, I pronounce it Coh-lette and think it's pretty. I wouldn't be thrown if someone told me it was pronounced Cuh-lette... it's a really minor mispronunciation.

Its pretty and I honestly don't like Magnolia, lol, especially in comparison to Colette.

  • Magnolia is pretty but a little too flouncy. Colette is stronger and more sophisticated, I think.
  • Well my GP name is Magnolia but putting that aside for now I like Colette too and to me that pronunciation difference is real small. If you wanted you could correct, so many names need to be corrected once or twice but people pick up on it quick and the "issue" passes.
