Baby Names

Cormac, Finlay, Padraig

While we still have a top 3 (Euan/Ewan Kelly, Kelly Patrick, Rorik) we are talking about other names again. WDTY of Cormac, Finlay, or Padraig? Either with the mn Kelly or Patrick/Padraig. We have a McLastname and DS1 is Gareth.

Our main hesitation with Cormac is the Mac/Mc sound at the end of the fn/beginning of our last name, but it seems to have worked fine for Cormac McCarthy, so maybe it's not a big deal? For Finlay, DH does not want anyone to think he named his kid after a character on Glee (since I'm sure he would be called Finn at some point). And we're not sure if Padraig is too OTT Irish (DH and I are both of Irish/Scottish extraction FWIW). Dealbreakers? Overthinking? Should they be added to the list?

  • DH recently told me he liked Ewan, which surprised me. We're friends with one and I think it's a great name. I work with a Cormac too, another great one. All are great, you can't go wrong. But regardless, please please use Kelly, please. SUCH a GP for me.

  • I love Ewan and Padraig! Ewan would be my #1 if dh were on board. I like cormac but not with your last name and while I like Kelly, I just think it's too common if a girls name at this point so I'd use it in the middle name position.

  • I looooove Ewan, Kelly, and Patrick. Personally I consider Padraig too OTT. I like Finn but don't love Finlay. And I couldn't use Cormac with a McLastname.

  • I love Ewan! DH and I wanted this name for our son but also have a Mc last name and thought it sounded too familiar to the actor Ewan McGregor...
  • I really like Cormac!

  • If this baby had been a boy, we were going to name him Cormac, so I vote Cormac. :)

  • I love all your choices.  We're a McLastname too and definitely have the Irish names at the top of our lists (though I have a preference for family names, so that usually wins out).  I don't go to Glee for Finlay, but I do go to the WWE wrestler...image

DH used to be a big wrestling fan (it's been about 5 years since he really watched, though).
  • Finlay is our boys choice for impending team green arrival.

The only thing to consider if you care is that Finley is now much more commonly used for girls than boys. Like 2 to 1. I know that really upsets some people. Different spelling, I know, but a point proven above by someone saying that Finlay is too popular (when it isn't even in the top 1000), I think we're going to have to deal with Finlay and Finley being the same thing. :)
I'm not in the US, and from what I have found it's really not common on girls here. I couldn't find the complete data for my province, but the provinces I did find it for had Finley/Finlay/Findlay/other spelling variants more commonly found on boys than girls. The boy-name-on-girls trend is found here for sure, but not to the extent that it seems to be in the US.

At any rate it's not something we're super concerned about...after all we have Kelly on our list! :) DH is more concerned about the popularity/trendiness of Finn than hearing it on girls. You're right that it would always have to be "Finlay with an A" though...blah.

  • I know, I have obsessed over whether "Finlay with an A" is worth caring about. But in the end, I think I just prefer it over Finley.

And sorry, I didn't know you were outside the USA. Disregard my girl comment then. :p
Maybe we should both spell it Fynlee ;)

  • LOVE Cormac!  It was on our short list for this LO, but ultimately we decided against it.  Great name though.
