Baby Names

how do you agree on names when DH doesn't care about popularity but you do!?

So DH and I can't agree on anything when I comes to names, except for MAYBE Alexander as a first name.

He couldnt care less if the name we choose is number one on the ss list, but I can't even stand it when the name is in the top fifty.

He likes Camden and Gabriel, and I like Nehemiah. We can't agree on anything and even after we've thought we had a good name (Alexander Giovanni) neither one of us like it any longer.

So what do we do?? Settle on a more popular name? Or do I fight for less popular? Am I crazy for caring so much??

  • I started at #1000 on the SSN list and worked my way up. When I got too popular for my comfort, I stopped. Then I took my subset of names to DH and we worked off that. We found a mn that way and it fit with a fn I loved that wasn't on the SSN list.

  • I hate the popular names because I don't want him to be one of twenty. I hated that growing up. And working in retail I come across names from all different age groups and constantly see repeats in my area such as Jacob (most popular), Joshua, william, and of course those trendy names. I guess it just drives me crazy simply cuz I'm sick of hearing those names
  •  I'm fine with popular names, because in my experience, by the time the kid is older, it isn't popular anymore and no one cares. My oldest ds has a name that was very popular the year he was born. He's 21 and it has long since fallen off the charts. As a college senior, he could care LESS about it and it's had exactly zero impact on his life. I still love his name because it's his!

So I think you should go with whatever you like : )
  • Forget about the "popularity" list... Choose a name you both like and let yourself consider some of the names that he truly likes too.

Another idea is that you can pick the list of boy's name from 100 - 300 (for example) and ask your husband to mark the names he likes.  You do the same and compare your lists.  You might find some fresh names that are less popular.

    I like this idea.
