STMs I want your opinion!!!

So, how much do you really use your glider? How old was baby when you felt you didn't really use it as much? I am only wondering because I can't decide whether or not I should get one. The nursery is an ok size but not huge or anything. If I skip the glider I can opt for a slightly larger dresser (which I'm hoping can take us at least to age 5) or keep the smaller dresser and add a book shelf. I spend a good amount of time in my bedroom. I'm not really a basement dweller when it comes to relaxing and watching TV/reading. I like to be propped up with pillows in my bed. So for the first few months we'll have the bassinet in our room where the nursing will most likely take place. I would only use the glider if DH really needed a good night sleep or if the baby was overly fussy and making too much noise and I had to take her out of the room. I guess maybe in that sense it could be useful. Anyway what are your thoughts? I'd hate to buy a piece of furniture only to turn around and want to get rid of it in a year.

Re: STMs I want your opinion!!!

  • Never used one. His room at the time was the size of a postage stamp. I'm getting one for this baby and moving it to the office after we're done with it for feedings.

  • I used mine a ton. We lived in that thing. We still will cuddle there to read books and sometimes nurse. Since it's in DD's room, sometimes she uses it alone to read books or play with her dolls. But, I think like anything else, it is a matter or personality and preference. There will be people that don't use them a lot and people that do. Could you find one second hand and then if you find you don't use it much, sell it on craigslist or something like it?

  • We moved DS into his room at two months so I used it every night to nurse him. And once I was back to work I would sit in there and nurse him prior to us heading out the door. We also used it every night when we read to him before bed. We continued to use it until the day we moved him into his new room a few months ago. Definitely worth the cost for us.

  • We didn't use one, but we did have a futon in the nursery with my first son, and I sat on that a TON and slept on it a few times. There were definitely a ton of times when I needed somewhere to sit in his room. Maybe just get a small upholstered chair? I've seen a lot of moms use the Jennylund Ektorp chair from ikea in baby rooms. It's supposed to be a smaller chair, but I've never seen it in person.
  • We got a little recliner instead of a glider, and we've used it multiple times a day day 1. DD is 10.5 months and I can't imagine not having it.

  • Ditto pp. we got a rocker recliner and I love it. I didn't put it in the nursery since the babies weren't in there right away. It is a great cuddle chair and some nights my bed now...
  • We didn't use ours at all. It was more comfortable to go out to the living room lazy boy.

  • We used it a lot. Like, every day. I imagine it will be the same with this baby. I liked to sit in it to nurse.

  • I used mines a lot. At first for breastfeeding and cuddling time. Now my son uses it to play on it.

  • I still use mine every day, and DD is 17 months old. Even when she slept in our room (first 6 months), I went into the nursery to feed her at night. I can't even guess how many hours I have spent in that chair! Now we use it to read bedtime stories and snuggles.

We are actually buying a cheap glider and ottoman to put in DD's room and moving the nicer chair into the baby's room because I can't imagine not having one in DD1's room for bedtime and the thankfully rare middle of the night wake ups.

  • We had one, I never used it.  I don't know.  I ended up donating it to his EI playgroup.  Now I'm kind wishing I had one.  But it probably wouldn't get used.

  • We got a super comfy upholstered rocker and use the heck out of it still. I nursed in it, passed out and slept in it, and we still use it every day to snuggle and read stories.

  • I lived in mine. Seriously. Especially the first few months. It was the one peice of furniture we splurged on and I have zero regrets. We got a dutailier that can recline (hugely important) and a matching ottoman.

He is 28 mos and we still use it for snuggles before nap and bed.

  • I got one as a gift when I had my DD 7  years ago, I barely used it. As a matter of fact it's still sitting in my living room taking up space, however I'm not ready to get rid of it for sentimental reasons. My aunt and grandmother got it for me and since have passed.

  • We used ours all the time. Every night that's where she got her bottle before bed.

  • We have a rocking chair and honestly never used it. DS hated to be rocked, the only thing he liked was to be bounced. So I couldn't live with out a medicine ball. I used that for a chair when I didn't nurse him in bed/couch.

Yes!  Ours is a reclining one too and that is key!!

  • I didn't think I'd use it much, but I do. I didn't for the first couple of months because I was always in the living room and did night feedings either in our bed or in the living room. But after we moved her to her room, we started using it a lot. Night feedings, some day feedings... she's only 1 now, so we still give her a bottle before bed and once at night in there. We also read books and things there... glad we got it!

  • We had a rocker/recliner. DD's room is tiny so ours is in the living room. I used it the first 2 months for MOTN feedings, until we figured out BFing side lying. It was awesome to have a recliner for that, never really used it as a rocker. However, a comfy couch works just a well. I usually preferred to nurse on the couch during the day. DH used the rocker for about the first 4months. I think it's one of those things that is nice to have but definitely not a necessity.

  • My opinion is that it is really nice to have. My son will be 3 in may and we still use it for story time before nap and bed. Used it a ton when he was smaller for nursing in and cuddling. I wanted a recliner, but his room wasn't big enough for it. The glider took up a lot less room.
Planning on moving the glider into the new baby's room in a few months when L gets his big boy bed.

  • I love my glider and don't know how I would have made due without it.  I still use it with my 15 month old and used it until each new baby was born so about 2 years.  I imagine that I will use it even longer with the last baby.
The lock function of my glider seems to have broken and we can't figure out how to totally disable it to make it stop locking.  If we don't figure out how to fix it, I will buy a brand new glider for this the fourth child.  That's how necessary the glider is to me.

  • I'm glad we had it.  DD is 21 months and we still use it a fair bit.

It's in our living room... so it's a piece of furniture there and is used as much as the other furniture.  It's nice to have somewhere for snuggles when she is sooky.

I may move it to the playroom when this LO is born so that DD can play while I nurse LO.  She likes to have someone in there with her while she plays, so it might be a nice place to for us to spend time together.

  • I tried nursing in bed and just didn't work so we used the glider exclusively. We toyed with the idea of using the same one for 2.0 but decided to get a second one because Beb still reads books in it.

  • Thank you all so much for the input! It's very helpful. I agree with someone who said it's one of those things where you don't know how much you'll use it unless you have one. I think after reading all of this I will get one. If it doesn't end up working out for us we can always sell it on Craigslist. I'd rather try it and see how it goes, I guess. Otherwise I wouldn't have any chair in there which may end up being a problem.
  • We bought a cheaper one, and I'm glad we did. It got used nightly for nursing sessions and bedtime stories, but we moved her to a bed at 22m and that is where we do all her reading now. The glider hasn't been in the room since we got her bed. I'm sure it will get some use this time too, but again glad it wasn't one of our splurges like I originally wanted. It was comfortable but not to the point of falling asleep while holding the baby comfortable which was also important to us, as a tragedy struck a close family friend who fell asleep rocking their newborn. ( again not the norm, but important to us).

  • @laurblumThis is an awesome question that I had been curious about myself.
I'm wondering if they come in handy much more if you are a breastfeeding Mom. I plan to breastfeed and I'm not sure where will be most comfortable to go in the middle of the night.
  • We have a smaller rocking chair that we still use daily and DS is almost 23 months. There's no way I would have gotten through the newborn phase without it.

  • Some people who nurse were telling me they preferred a recliner to a glider because the angle made it better for nursing. I'm not sure I can fit a recliner in the room though.

Yep, me too.  DD was in her own room from Day 3.  It was uncomfortable for me to nurse in our bed because of my 3rd degree tearing.  I was a bit sad to have to move it out of her room and into the nursery even at 2 1/2 years old because we still read bedtime stories, etc sitting there.

The baby's nursery is a much smaller room though and to have room for it to "glide" and recline it has to be so far away from the wall that it literally looks like its just sitting in the middle of the room.  Definitely not ideal.

Glider or not, I think you definitely want a comfortable chair in the nursery.
