Severe adhesive reaction

I don't want to scare anyone- this is rare and has not happened with my other c/s. But just want to share in case it helps anyone... I knew I had a sensitivity to adhesive. Not latex but any kind of glue/stickiness. My Ob had me ask for a Betadine prep for the c/s and generally speaking, it was WAY better. However, they did have to use steri strips directly over my incision (as they have before for my previous two). Omg, this reaction is AWFUL. It was so red/puffy last night that the nurse called the on call doc who said to remove the strips immediately. Thankfully pulling them off didn't hurt much at all but sure enough, it pulled off some scabs and began to bleed a little on the edges. That stopped pretty fast but it became very obvious how serious this reaction was. There are 3 hard BLISTERS and about a 1 inch red/puffy area around the whole incision. They tell me that the incision itself looks great- no worries there. It's just the area immediately around it. It still itches but now I've got Benadryl cream which gives temporary relief. I'm pretty worried b/c it looks awful. My scar has been so minimal in the past and this time... It's bad. The drs/nurses don't seem concerned and my doc has not actually seen it (she's iced in). So I'm really hoping they are right and it will clear up in time but till then OWWWWWW. All I can say is, if you even suspect an allergy you need to be discussing it in depth with your doc ahead of time!

Re: Severe adhesive reaction

  • Ouch. I had abdominal surgery when I was a teenager, and they used those steri strips. They were miserable. I had blisters and open sores.

I'm so baffled- I definitely had these same steri strips before and while there may have been some irritation, it was nothing like this. So weird how different each reaction can be :-(

  • I'm worried about this too! I had a mole removed before my wedding 3 years ago and the steri strips left tape burn so bad I had to use Obaji fading cream to get my skin back to normal. :( need to talk prep/bandage with my doc tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder!

I had the same reaction with my first c section. I told my dr about it at my last appt and she told me to remind her to use paper tape in the or. It much better this time. I also recommend scrubbing off the remaining adhesive from the little monitor spots and iv as soon as possible.
