Letting him whine himself to sleep

I don't know what else to do... I know he is way too young to let him cry himself to sleep. If he cries I'm up and see to him. However every night from 9-2 or 3 he cries and fuses. Nothing soothes him including me. He squirms when I hold him and while he may fall asleep in my arms for a short time he'll wake up screaming

Last night I just needed a break. At 2:30 am I thought I would put him down for just 5 minutes so I could take a breath. As I put him down he was screaming but quickly went from screaming to just whining and then to just making sounds to finally falling asleep 10-15 mins later. I tried the same thing just now and he's been whining for the past 5 minutes. Should I go and pick him up or wait it out to see if he makes himself fall asleep again.

WWYD? Let a baby "whine" themselves to sleep or try and hold them until they finally fall into a deep sleep?

Re: Letting him whine himself to sleep

  • If he really is just whining/fussing I personally don't see a problem with letting him do that for 10 minutes or so until he falls asleep.
My LO has been doing a lot of fussing and sometimes I think it's just him experimenting with sounds he can make. I think he really likes to hear himself.
If I know he isn't hungry and that he has a clean diaper I will let him fuss sometimes.

  • Usually I will let him whine, but I lay next to him or I stay very close so he can see me or I will lay my hand on his chest, sometimes holding a paci in his mouth. So, yes, I let him whine...with contact that isn't holding.

  • If we don't with my son, we don't get any sleep from his 1am feeding on. Then he sleeps all day because he was 'up' a good portion of the night. I know his is whining for his pacifier that has fallen out (I watch it on the monitor) usually, eventually he will find his hands to suck, or will fall asleep. If I go and put it back in his mouth, it's out again by the time I get back to bed usually, and the process would repeat, if I don't try self sooth whining to happen. If he escalates to a full cry or I know he's been asleep for sometime after feeding and eating I will check. Hope that mAkes sense. Good luck.
