No more lanolin? WTH

I'm stupid and did not bring my own lanolin to the hospital thinking the LC would give me some. Well now they are saying they no longer recommend it b/c women were using too much and baby kept slipping off and it was causing latch problems. They don't even sell it in the BF supply store downstairs. WTH?! And we are iced in so DH can't even run out to the store to get some. Now my nips are sore b/c baby is tongue tied and all they have for me are soothies which feel better but don't do anything to heal/prevent more damage. I would rub colostrum in to let it air dry, but I can't get much out and my milk probably won't be in for another 2-3 days. Arrrgh- sorry for the rambly vent but seriously, why didn't I just throw a tube in the bag?!

Re: No more lanolin? WTH

  • I'm sorry that sounds terrible. I know you said you're iced in, but is there no one with a truck or other equipped vehicle that can make the trip for you?
  • Loading the player...
  • They have no other substitute? What are they recommending instead? That is so frustrating!
  • Do you have aquaphore it's what they told me to use.
  • That really sucks! My hospital gave me some and never mentioned not wanting to use it. I hope they don't stop suggesting it because I love the stuff!!!
  • Can you ask a visitor to bring some? DS's godmother brought me a tube when he was born.

No we are stuck in this major "ice catastrophe" in Atlanta. State of emergency- no one is coming/going. I do have Vaseline but I thought that was a no no for baby. Will check with LC. The one here agrees that it was stupid for them to stop stocking it entirely. They should discourage it or offer proper use instructions but not ban it!

  • I would whine to a nurse, OB or pedi..whoever appears in your room next to check on you. :)

My LC with my 2nd was TBH a total b*tch about stuff like that. I finally started just asking the nice nurse and she'd get me whatever I wanted. :)

Or they should at least have an alternative on hand!
I told DH to check for earth mother love products and they didn't have theirs either. I love that this hospital is VERY pro BF and has an entire staff of LCs who are even sleeping in for 3 days with the ice storm. But I met the one who I think is the new "lead" LC yesterday and must say... We did NOT click at all. She told me that we shouldn't supplement and just wait for my milk to come in (even tho I clearly told her mine has taken 4-5 days with both previous babies). Baby lost 9% of her body weight in 24 hrs (8 poopy diapers!). If you think I'm waiting 5 days to feed her, you are clearly an idiot. Anyway, the one here for the ice storm now is awesome so we are clicking. But I'm pretty sure I know where this rule came from.

  • My hospital discouraged the use of lanolin and instead recommended using the colostrum to moisten nips.
  • Wtf? My LC gave me like 4 tubes of it! Do they not have medela stuff? What if you wanted it and were EPing?

  • I'm a FTM, and I don't know where I would be without my lanolin! Likely not still BF! I started without any (didn't bring any) and the LC only visited once-saw we had a decent latch, and left. Once we got home, I started using it, and it makes a HUGE difference!

  • I put my tube in when I packed my bag just to be on the safe side. Last time they had some for you with the post partum supplies, but I'm not taking any chances, need it!
  • I'm glad you were able to get some lanolin! Will your hospital provide APNO? It has saved my poor nipples this time around! I just got refill today before the snow storm hits us in the northeast!

  • Nooo! I just discovered lanolin (baby came on Saturday) and it's such a miracle worker on the nips that I'd go berserk if they tried to veto it! I hope someone can get you some.
  • Beg someone to bring you some!
