Rash not thrush?

Long story short, I exclusively bf for the past 1.5 months my boobs have been super itchy, when milk comes in and during the feed and after. Which means all the time! I've checked with my ob she says not thrush, pedi doesn't seen thrush on LO either. Past few weeks I see a rash (not red, just a bit raised) that goes away and comes back every few days. After a shower some areas on them are bright red, but fade in a few minutes. It's both sides, so not ibc. And for the record I use only free and clear detergent and no lotion (except lanolin occasionally). Anyone had anything similar? What helped?

Re: Rash not thrush?

  • Hi I think I may be in the same boat, had a rash on one breast, it was a small area so thought it wasn't a big deal. I also EBF.
Over the past month the rash is now on both breasts, although it covers more area on the first. It is MUCH less ichty and red them it had been and if I start scratching its hard to stop but I can usually leave it alone most days, nights are worse. I find a cold compress helps relieve the urge to scratch.
I showed it to my OB at first she just said but some cortizone on it- make sure it's not anywhere the baby would get it in her mouth.
I showed it recently to a lactation consultant who also agreed it wasn't thrush or ibc or mastitis or anything and said I could even take benedryl occasionally for the itch.
Long story short, I'm living with it too, it's getting milder so I'm thinking it may be some type of eczema or winter itchy skin that just happens to be on my breasts and nothing more serious/specific.
Ps. The back of my legs can also get super itchy but don't have the red rash.
Hope this super long rant helps!

  • I had this also and occasionally they are very itchy. I also exclusively breastfeeding. Mine does look like a rash but they certainly are red! Hopefully relief I'll come soon!!
  • I have this too. Mostly under my breasts. I use cortisone on the areas right after LO feeds and it has been helping a lot.
  • Sounds like yeast. Air your bewbies out and keep them dry.

  • Thanks girls. So just "dermatitis" or the medical term for anything on the skin that's irritated and no known cause. Grr. I hate to use cortisone, obsessed that DS will still eat it somehow. It's good to know I am not alone in the very least.
