Infertility

Hello! and ET Rest time Q

Hello!  I had intro'd in November, but I have mostly been active on the 3T board and lurking here.  After a couple of failed IUIs and a nice & healthy break, we will start up with BCP in early March and will ER/ET in April.  I finally got my orientation appt set up for 2/25.  I'm excited just to get this show on the road!  I'll be posted here more, so that's my mini re-intro :)

I need to set up tentative vacation time soon, and with a lot of people in my office requesting vacation time, I can't afford to wait to get more answers at my orientation.  How long does you RE recommend you stay home after ET?  The two people I know who have gone through IVF said drastic differences - 2 and 7.  So I'm curious what insight you have...and is it 100% bed rest?  Work from home?  Just take it easy?  Does it depend on your diagnosis?  I want to give my director the proper heads up, even if I can't say the exact dates now.

Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility

Re: Hello! and ET Rest time Q

  • for the 4 different times (3 diff REs) ive had and ET, it was 24-48 hours, then resume normal activity with no strenuous exercise or heavy lifting until beta. good luck! and hope you have a flexible boss and are able to reschedule last minute if needed a couple days before and/or after your tentative ET because you can never know how a cycle will change once u get started and it could effect the dates.

  • For my IVF, they told me to do "couch rest" for 24 hours after ET, but that I could go back to work the next day which was a little less than 24 hours because my ET was at 12:30. They said if my ET was any later, that I should take the next day off from work. And no strenuous activity and no heavy lifting for 3-4 days and then still take it easy after that. They also made a point of saying being inactive longer than 24 hours wouldn't help.

Trying to plan through the cycle was one of the most frustrating things because we have no control over any of it- how we will respond to the meds, what time they will schedule us for the procedures, etc.

    Good luck!

    Everyone welcome!

  • I was told to rest only the day of ET, and normal activities afterward. But I rested 3 days.
  • I haven't actually got to my transfer yet, but my RE says bed/couch rest for "24 hours" (basically just the rest of that day) and then light activity is ok. No heavy lifting or high cardio activities.

This is almost exactly what my RE said too - bed/couch rest for 24 hours and light activity for the next 24 hours. After 48 hours, I can go back to my normal activities other than the the things that Carol mentioned above.

Personally, I decided not to go to work the day after ET (today) because I need to be on my feet for four straight hours and setting up the labs requires some heavy lifting. I felt more comfortable getting a sub for the day.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • I definitely think it depends on your job. If you have a desk job you could probably take only a half day post ET, although a full day is probably better. If your job is more active you may want more time. Some docs recommend bed rest for up to three days, but mine says that probably doesn't help. I had acupuncture then went shopping the day of ET. The next day I made ravioli (lots of standing) and that worked out. Some studies have suggested that more activity post ET is better, possibly due to increased circulation. ER was one day off for me.

Of course, if you end up with OHSS it becomes a different story.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks ladies!  I'll just plan on out 2 days after ET and maybe work from home another day or so.  Maybe I'll be lucky and it'll be close to the weekend.  I at least have an understanding director who did IVF with his wife and my manager is very flexible and lets me work from home, if necessary.  I just don't want to surprise them with my schedule.  I've been on a break for a while and haven't updated them on my plans.
