I can't yawn

It's driving me BANANAS. B-a-n-a-n-a-s! I can't take a deep enough breath. This has started happening every night. I have trouble taking deep breaths sporadically throughout the day, but I can usually get a good one after a couple of tries. Not so with yawning. And to make matters worse, it keeps me awake! It wouldn't be such a problem if I could just fall asleep, but my body just keeps trying to yawn over and over to get the deep breath it needs. Then when I do finally fall asleep, I can't breathe through my nose because all the yawn attempts have stuffed it up, and I don't sleep well because my mouth is dry and sticky from mouth breathing.

Cheese and rice.

(I didn't mean to use multiple food jokes but there you have it.)

Anyone else? Any suggestions?

Re: I can't yawn

  • How are you feeling emotion wise? I have this problem when I'm having anxiety problems. That's why I ask.

Not trying to brag, but I've yawned about a dozen times reading your post and typing my response. That's just what the word does, contagious in script just like it is in person :)

  • I've noticed lately that I can't take deep enough breaths with some of my favorite sleeping positions. Especially if my arms are curled In front of me while I'm on my side. I'm trying to find a comfy position where my shoulders are open to give my lungs more room.
I hope you find something that works soon.
  • My round ligament causes pain when I yawn while laying down or when I cough. I dont feel too much pressure against my lungs as of yet though.

This exactly.  It is harder to breathe when everything pushes up on your lungs, but the unable to yawn feeling is something that happens to me even when not pregnant because of anxiety.  I've had it since the beginnng of this pregnancy and it still comes and goes.  Breathing exercises and prenatal yoga have helped so much.

  • I don't have the yawning problem but I have bad sinuses and basically have been mouth breathing my entire pregnancy. I put a humidifier next to my side of the bed that I run at night and that helps with the sticky icky morning mouth feeling. Otherwise I'd wake up with a terrible dry mouth and morning breath that would almost kill DH.

Hmm I never thought of this, but I'll start paying attention. Interesting!

Sadly where I live there is only one prenatal yoga class per week, and it's scheduled during my work hours. Go figure! Anyone know if there are any good prenatal yoga vids on youtube?

    Edit: hit post too soon

No way! I've had this problem as an anxiety symptom since I was 18, but my doctors have basically told me I'm crazy. They insist that it's not a valid anxiety symptom.

  • For the stuffy nose I use a humidifier and I wear one of those nose strips to bed. It actually has helped me sleep better, and of course it's very sexy!

  • I had this for about 3/4 days in a row. It passed on its own but was really annoying when it was an issue. Hope it passes for you soon!
  • I had this exact problem in the beginning of the 2nd trimester. It lasted about 2 weeks then went away... I'm hoping it doesn't come back because it was miserable! I kept trying to take a deep breathe but it felt like my lungs just couldn't expand, and I could hardly think about anything else! I have no idea why/how it went away, but it makes sense that yoga and breathing exercises would help. I am more physically active now than when I was having that problem, so maybe that has helped. I hope it goes away for you!
