Heads up baby!

I couldn't think of any othe title sorry . So I have been reading other threads noticing that people are placing there babies in the bumbo seat and other play toys that they would have to have control of there head. So how old are your little ones that are able to do this? Right now I can put my little one in a bumbo seat but I can not leave her alone because I feel like she does not have good control yet . She still bobbles around . She is 8 1/2 weeks .

I was thinking of putting my LO in the bumbo, he is 7.5 weeks. Dh doesn't think he is ready, as he is kind of twitchy and sometimes falls forward when he gets lazy. I'll probably try it out soon. No matter what, I won't leave him in it alone until he is much older. I would switch him to his swing.

Eta: my mom put him in the exersaucer the other day. She said he did fine, but couldn't reach the toys and was sad.

  • I have been wondering the same thing as we were given a jolly jumper. LO is 10.5 weeks and has good head control but I am just not sure it is enough.

  • Do you both do a lot of tummy time ? I feel like we don't do enough and that's why she can't hold her head up already without concern . We have two big dogs and either I have to out them outside or literally stay on top of them while we are having tummy time because they are somewhat curiouse about her still .
  • We're right at 8 weeks and there is no way he could go in a Bumbo @pink flamingo. Not enough tummy time or just age contributes to this. :)
  • Well I'm glad I'm not the only out there . - Katemw-
  • LO wil be 10 weeks tomorrow and I don't think she's quite ready for her Bumbo. She has good head control but its not where I'd want it to be to put her in it.

  • LO is 11 weeks tomorrow and is ok with head control. I know we don't do enough tummy time, she hates it, but still needs more strength before going in the bumbo.
  • Not going to lie, the only reason LO gets a good amount of tummy time is because when grandma watches him 3x a week, he gets a lot of it. And even then, it is mostly back-time. He doesn't really like a lot of true tummy time.

  • Didn't someone mention recently that even if your LO has head control you shouldn't use bumbo before 3-4 months because it's bad for their spine that young?

  • My dd has been able to hold her head up since she was born, she gets tired though and a little floppy after a while so there is no way I would put her in a bumbo yet. She is almost 6wks. I am going to give her a few more weeks.

  • I've only out LO in her bumbo for a couple pictures. I don't feel like she is ready to sit in it for any length of time, even though she has good control and can hold up her head.

  • @Cash what don't you think you understood from the OT? I've worked with a lot of feeding issues and OTs from the sounds of it you got what she was saying but if you want more normal people not OT speak let me know I can help translate :)

Yes. Myself and a few others mentioned that a bit ago. It was a short thread though. No way I would use it before 3 months. Might wait until 4

Yes and even then it should be used sparingly from what I understand.
  • Eh. It was seriously for one minute just to see if he could do it (and take a pic) I'm sure his spine is fine.

Of course his spine is 100% fine. It's just not recommended to use it to put them in for a greater length of time (like 10-15 min) until they are older. That's all.

  • All the do this, not that, be careful of this and weary of that... We just don't use one at all.

That's just personal preference , though. I didn't want to worry about all the guidelines.
