switching to ff?

I am contemplating about formula.  I know nothing about it, as DD has been bf this entire time.  I am starting to have a hard time keeping up with pumping and work.   Can you give a bottle of formula 2xday and still keep feeding DD bm too?  How do you start this?  TIA

Re: switching to ff?

  • I've been mixing formula and bm for bottle feedings, which ensures that we have plenty to feed the babe (and it also helps her sleep longer). At night, I still bf, as she typically wakes up once to eat still. We tried just straight formula, but she wouldn't take it since it tasted so different initially.

Right now we're at about 4 to 6 ounces per feeding, so we'll just do a half and half bottle, give or take.

How do you mix BM and Formula?  ANy specific type of formula?  TIA

  • We use similac isomil (it's their soy formula, with the reddish-purple label). DD has a problem with dairy, and our pedi okayed it (she got a rash on her bum even when I ate dairy). If your DC doesn't though, I'd imagine that the regular dairy-based formula would be just fine.

As for mixing it, we typically keep a thermos of boiled water around and use it to mix the formula. One of the similac scoops makes 2 ounces, then I'll just top off with bm.

  • When mixing bm and formula - just to be clear - the bm does NOT replace the water - some people get that confused and it's very dangerous to mix powdered formula with bm minus the water.  You mix the formula powder and water per the directions - then add bm if you want to.  I feed bm and some formula - I used the liquid, ready to feed formula (no mixing required) so I add bm to those bottles sometimes.  But usually I just feed ds some bm bottles, and some formula bottles.  he'll take either without complaint (i'm lucky!)
    Wheee!
