WWYD? Morning 6 mth shots and afternoon flight?

Hi ladies, S13 mom here looking for some opinions from you ladies who have recently been through your LO's six month shots... We are scheduled to fly and visit my family later this month late in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the only day I could schedule my LO's six month shots is the morning of our trip. He slept the entire day after his two month shots but was miserable after the four month shots. So, what would you ladies do? Fly the same day as the shots or try to find another flight the following day? We don't want to wait on the shots. Thanks!

Re: WWYD? Morning 6 mth shots and afternoon flight?

  • If it were me, I'd reschedule either the shots or the flight, but not try to attempt on the same day.  DS2 has been cranky after his 2, 4, and 6 mo shots (and they get quite a few at 6 months--will it still be flu season for your LO, will he/she get a flu shot also? My DS got 4 plus an oral vaccine as well). Flying is hard enough on LOs (and let's be honest--parents too!) without trying to do it after shots!

  • I'd just fly the same day and bring baby Tylenol or Motrin. DS didn't have major issues with his 2 or 4 month shots, but I did feel the need to give Tylenol once a few hours after. But for his 6 month shots I didn't feel the need to give him Tylenol at all.

  • I would reschedule. If he had a reaction or was feeling bad, I wouldn't want to subject him to all the commotion of a plane/airport. My LO was a grump after his 6 month shot and would have been pretty unpopular if he was on an airplane full of people.

  • My LO has been a cranky mess since 6 month shots but that didn't start until a couple days later. The day of he was sleepy. I'd reschedule one or the other,  you never know how LO is going to react to them.

  • Both barfed epically after the six month shots. I'd reschedule.

  • My LO has never had any issues with any of his shots, but even so I don't think I'd schedule a flight for the same day.
  • Well, crap. Looks like I should probably move our flights, just in case.

    Thank you again, ladies!

    I wouldn't do them together.

LO's worst reaction was at the 6 mo shots. She had a 103 fever for 36 hrs and literally moaned and whined in her sleep.

This was us too. Horrible reaction to the 6mth shots and she normally handles her shots well.

  • @denverbride2005 my lo got 3 shots and an oral vax at 6 months but 4 shots and an oral vax at 2 and 4 months. (But we didn't do flu - they were out plus I'm ball eric to flu vax). How many had your LO gotten before? ( just trying to figure out the difference)
@silv3rlining, I think it might vary from doc to doc and from child to child--I don't think the vax schedule is exactly the same everywhere? not sure.

  • Gotcha @denverbride2005 I guess i just assumed it was CDC recommendations/guidelines.

I think the difference can be that there is a recommended time frame - so between maybe say 6-12 mo they should have x number of doses Of a certain vax. So some docs do that particular one at 6 mo while some do it at 9 or 12 mo.

Also when DS had his 4 mo shots they were out of the one for pneumonia so they said instead of getting it at 4 mo and 6 mo they gave it at 6 mo and will do the second dose at 9 mo.

Another issue we had was they were out of a combo shot so they gave that one individually and also did the flu shot, so at 6 mo my poor little guy had the oral vax plus 6 pokes instead of the normally scheduled three.

TL; dr - Just saying, there's a lot of room for variance even if you're following the recommended schedule.

And DS has been fine after all his shots, but you just never know how they'll react so I definitely wouldn't do the flight and shots on the same day.

  • I'd keep the appt and the flight.  Just bring baby Tylenol.  P did fine  with his 6 month shots despite getting a fever and being super cranky with his 4 month shots.
  • We are moving the shots so it isn't within the 48 hours prior to our trip.

  • We had bad shot days at the 2 month and then last week at the 6 month- like---whimpering in his sleep, crying, screeching. I'd reschedule either the shots or the flight- and if the shots are a few days off---it's really fine.
