Nystatin for thrush

Julia was diagnosed with a mild case of thrush at her 1 month appt on Friday. Pedi prescribed nystatin 4x/day, 1ml in each cheek using a syringe. We've been giving it to her for 2 1/2 days and it looks worse. We try to coat her mouth as best as we can but she spits most of it out. Has anyone has luck with nystatin or something else for thrush? The thrush doesn't seem to bother her but I don't want it to get worse and start to hurt or turn in to diaper rash as well. BTW - she is EFF so she didn't get it from me.

Re: Nystatin for thrush

  • How else could she get it? Serious question not trying to be obnoxious...

  • I asked the same question. We clean and sterilize her bottle nipples and pacifiers frequently. Pedi said it can just happen and is actually common in formula fed babies.

  • My son has it too and we formula feed also. He doesn't seem to mind the medicine most of the time. Usually I give it to him right before a bottle just in case it tastes weird haha. I also sterilize the bottles and pacis frequently and the dr said it is very common
  • Nystatin never worked for me. I just started to try Gentian Violet (it's OTC) and it seems to be working. It will stain her skin purple though.
  • I can't blame her for spitting it out because based on the smell, I'm sure the taste is not pleasant. My neighbor just suggested "painting" the liquid on the affected areas with a q-tip since the goal is to get the medicine to coat the areas. I read that most cases of thrush eventually go away on their own so hopefully even if she's not getting much of the med, it will clear up soon.
