Cervical Cerclage — The Bump
Pregnant after a Loss

Cervical Cerclage

Hello there, I haven't posted over here too much (mostly a lurker) but I was hoping that you ladies might have some insight for me.

*Previous loss mentioned*

I'm going in this upcoming Monday (I'll be 14 weeks) for an appointment where my doctor wants to discuss performing a cervical cerclage on me. With our most recent loss this past July, my cervix opened on it's own which caused the gestational sac to come through and then my water broke at 17.5 weeks and we lost our little one.

I guess I'm just wondering if any of you have had to get a cerclage? What was your experience with it? And what exactly is the procedure like? I'm a little nervous.

Thanks in advance for the input!

Re: Cervical Cerclage

  • I don't have any experience with a cerclage but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry for your loss and I wish you the best with your current pregnancy.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I also had a pregnancy loss due to incompetent cervix (the first loss may have also been caused by IC but it was diagnosed as placental abruption). This time around I had a cerclage placed at 13wks. I was really nervous about it but it wasn't as bad as I was anticipating. Actually the epidural caused more pain/issues than the actual procedure and recovery. I didn't have alot of spoting post-op and very few cramps, Tylenol worked just fine for the discomfort.

Around 19wks my cervix began to open (internally) and the MFM said without the cerclage we would have lost our baby. So in our case the cerclage was definitely worth it. Some women who get cerclages though don't have to be on bedrest, but will probably be monitored more closely.

I hope everything works out for you. Best wishes!!

  • I lost my daughter due to IC last pregnancy at 20w4d and wasn't sure about getting a preventative cerclage this time around. I was being closely monitored and at 18w6d my cervix again started to shorten and funnel and I got a rescue cerclage then. I wish now that I had gotten one at 14 weeks and if we choose to have anymore children I will be getting one for sure.

I found the anticipation of the cerclage and the unknown more stressful than actually having the cerclage. I had slight discomfort after the procedure and since then haven't really had any issues. I am 35w tomorrow.

    Good luck!
