Plastic water bottles?

I've read a ton of articles stating how plastic water bottles are unsafe for pregnant women which kind of scares me a bit. Almost all on the go drinking bottles are plastic...is anyone besides me nervous about this? Has anyone switched to strictly glass? I purchased a glass bottle, but it only holds 20oz which barely gets me through the morning. What is everyone doing daily for water intake?

Re: Plastic water bottles?

  • Get a plastic reusable bottle without bad stuff :)
  • I have a metal one (stainless steel)

there are TONS of those around, try a hiking/outdoor store

I have them in lots of different sizes

  • Loading the player...
  • and it's not just pregnant women they are bad for - water in a plastic bottle that gets heated (like in the sun if it's in your car) leaches all sorts of bad chemicals into the water that is bad for EVERYONE

dd drinks from stainless steel water bottles as well, so does my dh

  • Do you have a water filter? DH and I don't have a filter so the water is coming out of large plastic bottles into my glass bottle. It's just an oxy moron basically...maybe I should get a filter.

  • yea I have one that lives in my fridge, but I think it's more about the REUSE of plastic bottles, or when they get heated that's an issue, not much should leach from the water if you're just pouring it into something else

I buy plastic bottled water but once it sits in my car too long or overnight (in the hot FL sun) I refuse to drink from it.

ETA- I only drink from them when I'm out running errands & such.

  • Just remember, those cases of water are most likely sitting in hot trucks and warehouses to be delivered. I'd use tap water, filtered if you'd prefer, instead of water from a plastic bottle.
  • I've always drank bottled water. Never had an issue. Drank it throughout my entire pregnancy with DD, and she's perfectly fine also.

  • I use stainless steel camelback bottles. Infill them from the tap at home and take them tk work. I can't stand the taste of the yap water at work so after my two are gone I'm up a creek.

Yikes now I'm freaked out. @amclaws to the rescue. I've been drinking 2 one liter plastic water bottles full of water every day at work and out and about. I still want to get a reusable container for cost purposes. $60/month for two each day is ridiculous. I want a bpa free bottle or glass sounds nice too.
  • I use a plastic bottle without the bad stuff in it. (Or I should say Really bad) I know plastic isn't the best option, but I haven't found a stainless bottle I like yet, and il too clumsy for glass. I think too that I drink more water when I can see how much is left. It's a better visual reminder for me.
  • As a teacher I needed one I could fill up in the morning that would last hours and hours and stay cold. I've had my 52 oz Bubba mug ($10) for over 5 years and love it!

This is a great option! I'm going to get one of these since I too teach and have a limited supply of water at work!

Another stainless steel water bottle user here. If you are thinking of going that route, double check that the bottle you buy is stainless steel, there are LOTS of aluminum bottles out there. The aluminum bottles have a coating on the inside to stop the metal from leaching into your drink. Yuck.

When formula feeding, I kept a full stainless steel water bottle in my diaper bag to mix bottles. I used glass baby bottles for my kids, but really wanted to use these: https://www.purastainless.com/products/infants/ If they weren't so expensive, I would have used them in a heartbeat.
  • I personally don't like stainless steel because the water changes temp. with the environment so sometimes I'm drinking hot water.  Ick.
I just use a Nalgene or other water bottle that's BPA and pthalate free.  Fill with tap water.  We filter our water at home with a Brita pitcher, but the water at work is good stuff.  I hike all the time, so I have to drink LOTS of water and this all works well for me.
I would not reuse bottles from bottled water like a Poland Springs or something b/c as a PP mentioned, they are sitting on trucks getting hot, so by the time they even get to the stores there are probably all kinds of chemicals already leached into the water.  Plus tap water is WAY more regulated and safer than than bottled water.

  • I got one that is all chemical free at TJ Maxx. The regular price was $18 and I pad 6. Can't remember which brand, but it's plastic. It's so clear people ask me if it's glass.

  • These type of "news stories" are right up there with "don't stand too close to the microwave" and "cell phones cause cancer" and I could go on... Ugh. Needless to say, unless I've seen research (which means published and peer reviewed in a scientific journal) i don't waste my brain cells thinking about it.
24 hour news networks will peddle any story to get page clicks. It's ridiculous.
It's likely, that if there IS a link between health issues and BPAs in plastics, the amount you would have to consume to see those effects would be staggering... Like you'd drown from drinking all that water first.

    Ok... End of rant.
