  • I am sorry.  These test are no fun.  I know I have to take it twice since I have a family history.

  • I think last time I didn't get tested until after the 20 week mark. Were you told to get tested already? That doesn't really make sense.

Yeah, I'm so confused.  I got mine around 26-28 weeks I think.

  • I'm so sorry. I had GD last time, and I have a glucose test in two weeks. Some doctors make you take the glucose test at the first trimester, and every two months afterwards if you had GD previously, or if you have many risk factors.

Fingers crossed you pass the three hour test.

  • Bleh...goodluck!! I had to do early glucose test with both of my previous pregnancies because of family history of diabetes. I'll probably have to again. That crap is no fun.

  • Yeah it's a little weird to post this without explanation since it's common knowledge that the glucose test is routinely given between 26-28 weeks.  So I'm not a fan of the confusion caused here...

But I assumed what the previous poster said, a GD history or risk factors. A friend of mine had to get several tests throughout her pregnancy due to previous GD, but it didn't show up until 28 weeks again.  I hope this pregnancy goes easier and there's no GD to balance.

  • im sorry you have to test so early.

I never had to do the 3-hr, so I can't speak to that, but...
FYI for the FTMs, the glucose test you will take ~26 weeks is NBD.  don't get all freaked out thinking it is this awful, horrible event.

  • I had GD last time and while it sucks to be on a diet it really help me keep excessive weight off. I had lost all my baby weight after about 2 weeks.  It was also easier to follow the diet since it wasn't just for me. GD sucks but really it isn't as bad as other conditions.

  • Thank you guys:). I would have posted more earlier but I was at work... Running late from my break.... I really thought I put down the most important info lol

  • Im 9 weeks and I had the Glucose Test too. I guess its coz Diabetes runs both in my mom and dad's side.
  • For women with a history of GD - you may get checked for GD very early - so they can see if you need to start managing your sugars in the beginning. My doc checked for sugars in my urine and I'll be taking a glucose test in the near future ( and I'm 9 weeks).

  • My doctor said she won't test me until 24 weeks even though I had it with my first. She said if she tested me too early she would have to just retest (based on APA) so there is no point in putting me through it twice. She just encouraged me to start the diet now. I can't say that I'm following it accurately now but if I fail the one hour I'm just going to tell them to call me a GD and let me monitor my sugar and diet. The 3 hour test made me so sick.
  • I failed the 1 hour, but passed the 3 hour! It's not uncommon, although it sucks that you're having to take it this early! I am not looking forward to doing that again. I'm just going to expect that I will have to do the 3 hour.

  • I did the 3 hour first thing in the morning too. My issue is that I tend to pass out when getting blood drawn and it's much worse on an empty stomach.

  • My OB wants me to get it done at 12 weeks because of my weight. I didn't have it until about 20 weeks last time. They said to eat what I normally would in the morning. I also requested the jelly beans instead of the drink. I didn't do the 3 hour, only heard about it in my other moms group.
  • My doctor wants me to do it too. My history is age 40, preeclampsia, and big baby (9lb 1oz). The nurse said it is normal for someone with 2+ risk factors. I don't want to waste an hour but they said I can drop in anytime to do it. I am 5'7" 147lbs so I think I am pretty average for a woman my age. Better safe than sorry.
  • FWIW I don't have any other risks other than the fact that my first born was a 9lb baby and that alone put me in group to test in the first tri.  I know a lot of people posted in my previous board that they failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour so good luck!

  • Women are tested in the first trimester if they have a risk factor like obesity. If you have GDM at less than 20 weeks then you are a diabetic. The placenta does not cause GDM until after about 20 weeks.
  • While it's more likely that you have diabetes if you test positive in the first half of your pregnancy, that is not necessarily the case. I was tested for diabetes recently, and my results were very healthy. Aside from having had GD at a previous pregnancy and genetics, I'm not at risk. I'm at a healthy weight, I work out, and I eat healthy. My doctor is still going to monitor my sugars during the first half of my pregnancy, just in case.

  • I failed the 2nd hour draw from my 3 hr test. Waiting for my appt with the dietician and no... I'm not obese.... So that's not the reason....
