FFing moms...2 quick questions

1. About how much does your baby eat? (Oz per bottle and typical time between feedings) Just curious to see how my 7 week old is comparing...he seems to be eating more lately.

2. How many bottles do you have? I feel like i realistically have plenty but im wondering if having more would make it easier.

Ok so i lied, im going to throw out a 3rd question i just thought of...

3. When do you switch to size 2 nipples?

Re: FFing moms...2 quick questions

  • 1. My LO generally gets 4 ounces per bottle every 3-4 hours. He occasionally takes 5 ounces. We average about 26 ounces a day. He is 9 weeks old today.

    2. We 15 Dr. Brown's bottles that LO likes. He doesn't like the nipple style on some if the other bottles we have. I also have 2 haven't bottles and some medela ones which LO drinks from. I use them mostly when he might need an ounce more to drink. Dr. Brown's bottles do not have an ounce line on them.

    3. I don't know and am wondering myself.

  • Our LO (4.5 months old/ 8 weeks adjusted) is up to 3 oz at each feeding. We give her "big" bottles at her 9 pm and middle of the night feeding that are 4 oz. She lets us know when she's hungry but her feedings are typically every 3 hours during the day.

We have 7 (4 oz) bottles but one stays ready to go in the diaper bag, so, we have 6 in rotation. We also have 6 (8 oz) bottles that we haven't started using yet. Once she eats more than 4 oz at each feeding, we will graduate to the bigger bottles… and I intend to buy another 2 pack to make sure we have a whole day's worth.

Our pediatrician told us to nipple up once she gets frustrated with the flow of her current nipple or when she is about 3 months (adjusted).
  • 1. My baby eats 4-5oz every 3-4hrs, except at night he goes through most of the night 5-7hrs.

    2. We have 6 Dr. Brown bottles we use for feedings but we boil water ahead of time and fill about 9 medela bottles (we had a ton of bottles we got from our baby shower)that we leave out at room tempature. When it's time for a feeding we pour the water from the medela bottles made ahead of time into the Dr. Brown bottle so we always have water ready to mix with the formula. So around 15 bottles total.

    3. We're still on level 1 nipples at 8 weeks but plan on switching to level 2 next month at 3 months old.

  • I actually have a formula pitcher...i would definitely suggest getting one it really does make things easier!

Oh another question...do any of you use plain tap water to mix the formula? We have been using nursery water but only bc the water where we live right now might not be too good...but im wondering if when we move if we can just use tap water?
  • 4 oz per bottle, every 3 hours still. DS is 3 months old tomorrow and he still wakes up every 3 hours at night.

I have 7 dr browns bottles but I only use 6. I make a pitcher of 24 oz and fill all the bottles with gas drops all at once. Then stick in fridge and feed on when he's hungry. I just stick in warmer and we're good to go!

ETA: I used nursery water for a while too and it's mainly for babies who need fluoride when their teeth come in. Nursery water is a rip off and is just distilled water with added fluoride. Fluoride isn't really good for your LO btw. Purified drinking water is fine or depending on your city you can use tap but I'd still use drinking water.

Oops didn't mean to reply to myself..

ETA #2: I just started using level 2 nipples last week and they're awesome. LO is still getting use to the quick flow though.

My pedi said boiling tap water is fine; that's what we do.

    2) I have 11 bottles but 3 of them are only 4oz and the rest are 8oz
3)I have dr browns bottles and I believe level 2 is at 3months

LO will be 8 weeks on Saturday.

    We only use tap water.

  • LO is 8 weeks old. She eats up to 4 oz about every 3 hours, but she goes longer through the night. We only use tap water and we don't warm it up. She seems to like room temp just fine.

We have 6 of the 4 oz bottles (we are using dr browns) and we have 12 of the larger ones we haven't started using yet. We wanted more to have less stress with cleaning them when we start daycare next week.

I don't know when we should switch nipples.

  • LO is eating 2.5oz every 3-3.5 hours.

We use playtex drop ins, we have 5 of the 4oz bottles and 10 nipples.  We have 6 or 8 of the bigger bottles.

I forget when we switched to a different size nipple...when they can handle the faster flow, get frustrated with eating cause it's coming out so slow...some of the things I remember.

We make our formula in a big measuring cup with a wisk, enough for 24 hours.  I make the 5 bottles, then keep the rest in the fridge until it's time to make more.

  • 1. LO is 9 weeks and is eating between 4-6oz every 3-4 hours.

    2. We have 12-4oz bottles and 12-8oz bottles.

    3. I think we're going to switch to level 2 at 3 months.

  • 1. We do about seven 4 oz bottles in a 24 hour time period.  She will be 7 weeks tomorrow.
    2. We have 6 bottles.
    3. She's still on the slow flow nipples.  I'm not sure when we'll move up.

  • 1. LO is 7 1/2 weeks and eats 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours (maybe 5 hours at night). Yesterday, he actually ate 5 1/2 oz during his mid day feeding. We're using 4 oz bottles, but may start switching to 8 oz bottles to see if he'll eat more at longer time intervals

    2. We have 9 Dr. Brown bottles that we use, so we only have to wash once a day.

    3. We still use the DB preemie nipples. We'll occasionally use a Level 1, but when we do that, it often results in a lot of the formula ending up on his face and bib. He has a pretty narrow mouth.
  • He eats 4.5 oz every 3 or so hours. Maybe a bit longer at night. 6 weeks.

I have a lot of bottles that I premake. I use the ready to feed.

  • 1) Julia is 1 month tomorrow and eats 4oz every 4 hours, sometimes going 5-6 hours in the MOTN. Apparently she has a hearty appetite because I think she would eat more if we gave it to her. 2) We had a ton of bottles but just started paring them down because we didn't like a lot of them. We now have @ 8 bottles we use. I use bottled water from a water cooler and just fill up several bottles every morning so all I have to do is add the formula at feeding time. I found Julia tends to spit up more when I pre-make bottles, even with warming them up. It's really strange. 3) I have no idea about the nipples - going to ask pedi tomorrow.

  • FWIW, when Baby Boots gets formula, we just use filtered water from the fridge (we have city water).

Switch nipples when they started getting frustrated and pulling at the nipple. Switching too early results in lots of dribbling and coughing/choking. I learned this the hard way. Also, no 'level 2' nipples are the same, there are no standards so when you switch will depend on your baby and the brand of bottle you're using.

Speaking of which, he just woke up. Time to pour some formula since the breastmilk ran out. :-/

This is GTK about nursery water. I will have my mom switch! Thanks!
We use Gerber pure water (bc we live on a farm with an old well) and it says "no added fluoride."
Yes some nursery water has no added fluoride. Either way, it's still a rip off because you're just buying higher priced distilled water with a different name on it.

He is 6 1/2 weeks and drinks 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours during the day, although he'll go 4-5 hours at night lately. A couple times a day, hell want an extra 2 oz or so within a half hour of finishing his bottle.

We have 12 bottles. I like having enough that I don't need to wash bottles and can just put the bottles (usually 7-8 at the end of the day) in the dishwasher. We'll also need those extra bottles once he's in daycare, so it's worth the investment for us.

We use tap water, although we put it through the Brita first. Our tap water has added flouride.

ETA: Our nipples say the next level is at 3 weeks. With DS1, we went up a size when he would start getting frustrated and collapsing nipples while feeding. It was usually fairly obvious that he was ready to go up a size after a day or so of that happening.

  • Ariella is 6 weeks old and eats 2-4 oz every 2-3 hours. At night she gets a much longer stretch though.

We have 6 bottles that she actually likes, which I think is a good amount. I'm debating getting 1 more pack of bottles though.

I've heard of changing nipples at 3 months. So well probably change around that time.

  • My dd is 7 weeks old.

    1. Dd eats 3 to 4oz every 3 hours during the day, sometimes she likes a oz or two snack in between feedings. She cluster feeds at night. She has a 3 to 4oz bottle at 5:30, 7, & 8:30. Then she will sleep a 7 to 8 hour stretch at night.

    2. We use Tommee Tippee bottles. We have 1- 4oz and 9- 8oz bottles. I like having a little bit more so I only have to wash once a day. We use Gerber water. It has fluoride but no added fluoride. Fluoride is really important for proper teeth development so you want flouride in your water but like anything too much can be bad for LO. We make our bottles fresh just because it works for us.

    3. I will just wait for dd to let me know when she is ready to size up.
  • Jeter will be 2 months on Monday, he eats 6 oz every 3-4 hours during the day and goes 6-8 hours through the night. We use our water cooler, the Brita, or bottled spring water. We have 6 bottles I like but 17 total. We'll probably switch nipples around 3-4 months.

@sweetsouthernmomma08 It's my understanding that once LO starts a bottle it has to be used within 1 hour or you have to throw it.
I was told the same thing. When bacteria from the baby's mouth mixes with the formula, it can start to spoil the formula. Also, I can't imagine taking it from cold to warm and back to cold again would be good for the baby to drink again but I could be wrong.

I haven't heard that.  But, I also don't warm my bottles.  LO drinks them straight from the fridge with no problems.
I would check with your Dr about this. My understanding has always been that the 24hr is for premixed, but not drank out of formula and that once a baby uses the bottle and their saliva mixes with the formula you can use it for up to an hour, but then should throw it out because bacteria will start to form, even if refrigerated. I never heated my formula with my first and those were the directions I went by per my pedi. Breastmilk can be stored and used longer after it is used because it has active, self cleaning properties.
