Anyone else? Weight loss with no m/s?

I was just curious if anyone else had lost weight? I've lost about 5 pounds now (actually since I weighed in Monday).

I have had spouts of nausea but haven't been sick at all. I've increased my calorie intake from before pregnancy and have had no food aversions (besides bananas but for a different reason). Eating a little healthier but I've always been healthy; with caloric increase I am confused. Slowed down on the intense workouts, I'm still active but not doing high intensity workouts as I did prior to pregnancy (get dizzy). Oh and I don't really have the weight to lose, prior to pregnancy 5'8" weighed in at 136. Now at 129 which I haven't been at since problably HS (maybe even MS). But I was just curious if anyone else is experiencing unintentional weight loss?

Thanks for any input.

Re: Anyone else? Weight loss with no m/s?

  • Not this time, but with DS I lost 5lbs before I started gaining anything around the beginning of the 2nd trimester.  Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed that hasn't happened with this one.  I was never nauseous at all with DS, not even a general yucky feeling until about 20 weeks when I discovered that pizza that was anything other than roof of mouth burning was not hot enough for him.

I did have weight to lose with DS (well both pregnancies really).  I'm 5'9" and was 165 when I got pregnant with him.

Have you brought this up to your OB?  5lbs in a week is a lot, especially for someone that eats well to begin with.  I could see someone with a really unhealthy lifestyle that needs to lose 50lbs losing weight really quickly if they make a lot of adjustments,  It could just be that you've slowed down on intense workouts, so maybe muscle is readjusting or something?  I'd call your OB though just to double check.

  • @Telly21182, I haven't contacted my OB yet. I didn't know if there was a reason to or if it was common to lose a little in the first trimester. I just had my first U/S tuesday and she said everything looked normal. I meaasured 5 days behind based on when last period was but she just said probably ovulated later. Will try and call her around lunchtime just to double check I guess.

Oh ya, and now i'm craving piping hot pizza! Mmmm!

I have had pituitary issues in past and have family history of thyroid issues so had tests done at my yearly appt in December. My thyroid test came back hypothyroid so I made an appt with an endocrinologist then found out I was pregnant. When I met with endo she believed was already pregnant when had original test done and said some women go slightly hyper as hcg levels increasing but they will balance out by the end of the 1st tri. I had blood test done again and thyroid back to normal. My ob is just going to monitor levels every trimester. You may just mention to ob in case they want to check TSH levels on your initial blood panels. Some symptoms of hyperthyroid are weight loss, trouble sleeping, anxiousness. I had all those symptoms. I bet your weight loss is nothing to be worried about but just wanted to share my experience.
    Edit for spelling.

I lost about 5 pounds too. I think my metabolism just kicked into a higher gear. I am starving all the time. I'm 5' 7" and weigh 125 at the doctors yesterday and if I drop closer to 120 I will call my doctor.

  • @emmylu30 and , Thanks for sharing. I would definitely not thought of thyroid as an issue but will mention to OB. It's interesting that you mention that because I read an article just yesterday stating that overdoing some of the superfood greens like kale, brussels etc can lead to thyroid problems. Not that I overdue that but was an interesting article that solidifies to me the 'everything in moderation'.

@dinodna3, thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. If I continue to lose like you said red flags will be raised. But I did do some more research on it and read another stories from moms that lost weight in the first trimester without m/s as well.

  • I haven't lost any weight, but I haven't gained any weight. No MS here yet, just a little nausea.

  • I keep boucing the same 10 pounds all over the place. I think I gained 10 immediately, then after a couple of weeks, I was down those 10, then at my 1st Dr.'s appointment I was back up the 10 again. I'm starting to think those bouncy 10 are all in my head...

I have lost about 5 pounds since I got y BFP. I was not overweight and am still in a healthy range. I have read it's pretty normal to lose some weight due to m/s, lack of appetite, and food aversion.

I was talking to a friend this morning who had lost about 20lbs by the end of her first trimester because she could not eat or keep anything down. She ended up gaining it back and then some and has a healthy happy two year old boy now.

ETA: I know it's not healthy or normal to lose that much weight, she was under her doctor's care about it.

  • I lost a few pounds at first, but that was just from not drinking. I definitely have weight to lose (not putting numbers up, but I'm a Fatty McFatterson) but I still eat healthy, just need to get my ass off the couch. Maybe that will help.
  • @JD83, LOL that crossed my mind  as to why I might be losing some weight.

I have found that convincing myself to at least go walk has kept the spouts of feeling like crap down at least. been taking a good book to the gym and just walk for 30-an hour, find that the time flies by too.

  • I haven't had any nausea but am afraid to weigh myself. I should just get over the fact that I'll weigh more for AWHILE and do it!
