Intro and a timing question

Hello ladies,

I got my first ever BFP yesterday after IVF (1/17 ER).  I am occasional poster on TTTC/infertility but mostly a lurker.  So now I'll be moving my lurking and occasional posting over here.

Quick and (I think) easy question.  I have never paid much attention to discussion of "betas."  I am scheduled for a test on Friday, and the info I've got from my clinic says they "usually" schedule a "possible" repeat test 48 hours later.  Then "usually" ultrasound in the 7th week.  Is this typical?  Maybe I'm wrong, but don't a lot of people get 3 or more tests, or is that only if there's a problem?   I'm just trying to figure out when I'll know if there are twins... they transferred two blasts and according to my clinic's stats I have a 50% chance of twins.  I've got three weeks to find out, huh? 

[Yes, I'll clear this up with the clinic on Friday, for now I'm just wondering if their schedule is typical.]

    It's typical to only do a couple of betas if they look fairly strong. The beta can't tell you if there are twins -- only the u/s. Seven weeks is pretty standard for a first u/s though some clinics will do the first a bit earlier.

    ETA: the first thing I should have said is Congrats!!!

    Welcome & congrats! Also, ditto PP... Each clinic has their own protocol and your's sounds pretty typical.

    BCP to manage endo from 10/2012 to 12/2012.
    FET w/donor embryos #1: 10/2013 Cancelled
    FET w/donor embryos #1.2: 11/2013     ~ ET of 2 beautiful blasts on 11/27.
    Beta 1: 503(12dp5dt) Beta 2: 1035(14dpt) Beta 3: 3001(16dpt)     Beta 4: 8503(19dpt)
    Twins with an EDD of 8/15/14! Team Purple

    Congrats, and I agree their protocol sounds normal to me too. I had beta #1 at 14dpo and beta #2 at 17dpo (a Friday and Monday). The numbers looked good so they didn't test betas again. I did have ultrasounds at 5 and 6 weeks because of a previous ectopic, but wouldn't have otherwise had one until 8 weeks.

    Me: 42. DH: 46.

    1st Pregnancy: MC, 11/19/00.

    2nd Pregnancy: DS born 04/10/06.

    3rd Pregnancy: CP, 03/11.

    4th Pregnancy: MMC, D&C 11/30/11, Genetic testing revealed Trisomy 4.

    5th Pregnancy: Ectopic, 2 doses of Methotrexate unsuccessful, surgery 4/10/12, right tube removed.

    Tried Letrozole January 2013-July 2013 (including 2 IUIs), all BFN.  After 2 1/2 years of trying for child #2, decided to "give up" after July cycle, based on AMA.

    August 16, 2013:  BFP our first month of "not trying!"  Still in shock.  Beta #1 (14dpo): 183.  Beta #2 (17dpo):  611.  Ultrasound 8/30/13: baby measured 6 weeks, 1 day, heart rate of 118 bpm! 
    Ultrasound 9/13/13:  8 weeks, heart rate of 176!
    Baby is due 4/26/14

    I only got two betas, which is the norm at my clinic. They only do a 3rd if the numbers aren't doubling appropriately. My first US was at 6 weeks but that was because of my clotting issues and the doctor wanted to up my doses blood thinner shots once we knew there was a heartbeat. Lots of people I know waited til 7.

    Ah, good to know, thanks.  I am anxious to know for the very important (not really) reason of figuring out some summer travel plans that we are being pressured to make imminently.  I will just hold off for a few weeks.

    Congrats on your BFP and welcome to the board! Your clinic's plan sounds very typical to me. An earlier u/s than that can be stressful because what you see is less conclusive the earlier you go. GL with your betas!

    Congratulations! Sounds like pretty typical schedule- ours was a bit different but I had bleeding and a threatened miscarriage so they watched me closer. Good luck :)

    Congrats!

    We had only two betas then 3 ultrasounds before being sent to OB.  Each RE is a little different how they hand it.
